Sometimes it's important to go back to the basics. People are motivated by relationships.
Strong relationships can prime a person to learn. And for those who have adverse childhood experiences, strong relationships can mitigate the negative effects of #trauma @edutopia @Turnaround ow.ly/S2sw50wfBJ2 #edchat #teaching

This speaks to the importance of fostering alliances with children. The relationships we build at Rowan are vital to our students’ academic and social growth. #lovesdschools #bettersd @sdschools
At Rowan, we use circles to foster alliances, build community, repair harm, and to address content. In our circles, all voices are heard and valued. #lovesdschools #bettersd @sdschools @restorativecircles
"A circle signifies that all participants are on the same playing field, which builds group ownership of maintaining the boundaries, expectations, and procedures."

Lots of kids come to school with invisible backpacks, weighted with struggles.
Stress, worry, fear, anxiety, trauma, loneliness, anger, sadness, & hopelessness can make them so heavy; too heavy for learning to happen.
Notice & love them instead.

Our Roadrunners are encouraged to follow our motto! Teachers are reading books about BEING KIND. Students are having discussions about what it means to BE BRAVE. Teachers are celebrating when they see students BEING RESPONSIBLE. And students are always encouraged to DREAM BIG!
