Rural businesses provided £6.4m of kit at the Glenmore-Strathnethy wildfire.
More than 40 rural businesses assisted or stood by during the fire, which burned over 3,300 hectares of the Cairngorms in July and August. Their returns log 266 person-days, 38 person-nights and more than 250 items of machinery.
Nobody was ordered into danger. People volunteered or agreed to assist, and employers released more than 50 staff and contractors from normal duties and swallowed the cost.
Then several of them reached the muster point with wildfire equipment and were stood down, left waiting or sent home. The @ScotLandEstates report puts it down to pace: the help arrived faster than registration, tasking and communications could take it in.
The Argocats, foggers and leafblowers that did reach the fire front are muirburn tools. Estates buy them and maintain them to carry out planned burning, and that is the only reason they were parked within reach of the Cairngorms in July.

Today @neilcgray announced @fire_scot will be able to put helicopters on standby & deploy them rapidly during periods of wildfire danger.
@ScotLandEstates has been calling for this, including in our recent report on the Cairngorms wildfire.
Good to see action being taken. 1/3
The next step must be to shore up this capability via a 4 nations approach to wildfire resilience & aerial firefighting.
It was good to hear @neilcgray also commit to pursuing this in parliament.
Work to do but positive first steps & all credit to @scotgov for stepping up. 2/3

Scotland’s wildfire response cannot rely on goodwill and improvisation. Our new Glenmore-Strathnethy #wildfire report records £6.4m of equipment & 266 person-days made available by rural businesses – and calls for a formal wildfire resilience system.

Headed up into the #Lammermuirs this afternoon. The heather’s blazing purple just now, and the rotational burning on the driven #grouse moors gives the hills that unmistakable patchwork look.

The Angus Glens are proof that integrated land management delivers environmental, social and economic benefits. If we want better outcomes for rural Scotland, policymakers must listen to the people who know the land best. My piece in @HeraldScotland today ⬇️

Really pleased to have an opportunity to do my bit to highlight the benefits of employing veterans….and reservists! linkedin.com/posts/jane-burn…
Fully support this representation by @TimEagleMSP - modular firefighting systems for the A400M Atlas probably represent one of the more cost effective options for enhancing the UK’s aerial response capability.

It's time to move the conversation on from the challenges we all agree exist, to the solutions we all know need to be implemented to reform Scotland's business rates system.
