Tesla in the US builds flying cars. Europe makes sure plastic bottle caps stay attached that you can hardly drink. While this is exaggerated to compare, unfortunately, I think the joke captures a serious problem.
For more than 10 years, we have been talking about innovation, startups and making Europe competitive. Yet how many new global technology leaders have we created, especially in Germany? We have excellent scientists, engineers and ideas. So why are we falling behind?
From my experience in science and biotech, one of the biggest problems is bureaucracy. We control almost every experiment, every purchase, every decision of a scientist. Endless approvals, regulations and administrative procedures. All of this costs time, money and, most importantly, takes away the freedom to be creative.
How can we compete with the US or China when building the same thing takes us much longer and costs several times more? I think we need to start where innovation begins: basic research. Give scientists freedom, responsibility and resources. Judge them by what they achieve rather than how many procedures they follow. Of course, we need rules and accountability. But we have to stop treating every scientist as someone who cannot be trusted. We cannot create an innovative Europe by regulating every step of innovation.

Read the thread and then the paper. Me thinks this is a fundamental insight into our experience of awareness.
1/ We discovered something totally unexpected about the neural structure of consciousness that overturns decades of thinking on its biological basis and brings us significantly closer to the recipe for generating conscious awareness.

BREAKING NEWS
The 2026 #NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel “for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.”
Should one target C3 or CD14 to treat acute traumatic brain injury in polytrauma patients? Well, it may depend on where the injury actually is. C3 and CD14 are differentially required for neuroinflammation depending on the brain structure: doi: 10.1007/00011-026-02367-7
In the acute phase of polytrauma, complement cascade is dramatically activated. The brain is substantially affected. What happens if C3 and or CD14 are genetically absent?

Today's publication by isab.science pushes the boundaries of neuropathological visualizations. Congrats to all authors!
In the students´evaluations, we got the highest praise and the worst criticism in the same sentence "Prof. Roselli has a huge knowledge and sometimes forgets that we are students and not colleagues...". But students are colleagues, since we are all students after all.
it is extremely rare to witness the birth of a new scientific institution, even more so when it is the brainchild of @AdrianoAguzzi . So, long live the Institute for Science of the Aging Brain @isab_science

One giant leap for mankind
History was made on July 20, 1969, when Apollo 11's Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first to set foot on the Moon.
For more than 5 decades, the total number of moonwalkers has remained at 12. NASA will change that with Artemis IV.
