Jacob talks about writing Shane and working with Hudson to “figure out” the character without needing to “diagnose him”: Andy: So Shane is— I mean, how would you diagnose him? Jacob: I wouldn't. And I try very hard not to, because I was just writing Shane. Is he a little OCD? Is he a little on the spectrum? Like sure. Probably. But I was not interested. I know a lot of people who have versions of autism, and they're all completely different. I was like, let's figure out what Shane is like. That's it. And we don't need to [diagnose him]. We're not doctors, none of us are smart enough to do that. Let's just be like, "This is Shane." And so we just really kept it to, Hudson and I, were like, "This is the way Shane would react." He folds his clothes when he takes them off. He likes things neat. And it helped. That kind of stuff—the behavior stuff, props stuff—it helps an actor to focus, too.
