18 years on, we (re)read the original and pressure-test it against what actually got built.
> What still holds: the double-spend fix. Proof-of-work as a timestamp server lets strangers agree on ordering with no trusted party.
> What no longer fits: "electronic cash." Bitcoin settled into a store of value, and payments moved to other layers.
> What never shipped: SPV clients that accept fraud alerts from full nodes, and a privacy model that chain analysis has largely taken apart.
> What he saw coming: Section 6 bets that fees can fully replace block rewards once issuance runs out. That bet is today's security budget debate.
> What we forgot: the paper's opening problem was trust in financial intermediaries. Look at where most BTC is held today.
