Rice and Pea!
Neil cooked his mum’s old Antiguan family “rice and pea” recipe, an annual tradition! (the “peas” are actually red kidney beans). Correctly described by the Wednesday crew as, “Delicious”
Last month we hosted Hull Community Theatre whilst they performed another historic play, Dear Hearts and Gentle People! This was their depiction of a post war holiday at Butlins, where the entertainment included a knobbly knees contest. They were simpler times!
Here are the Wednesday crew in for our gather and grow session. Still plenty to do before we have to vacate these premises for good and still plenty to harvest for a top lunch.
We meet every Wednesday from 10 am, everybody is welcome and… it's free!!
Getting closer to our time! At Rooted, there's a new reminder that we are currently searching for a new home in Hull city centre. This one was surveyors crawling around our raised beds as our landlord's do whatever it is that means we have to move out! They still get fed though!
Our home-grown veggies are filled with the love that we grow on site. This generally results in massive and tasty courgettes.
We call our Wednesday session, Gather and Grow. Everyone is welcome to join us from 10am for a spot of gardening and chitchat. We always start with a little wander around, a sort of self-help pat on the back. Its free and includes a home-cooked meal sourced from the Garden of Yum
Music being performed by Trouser Dress at the recent takeover by local community youth group, The Warren. Fantastic!
Rooted in Sunshine is our women’s group who meet here at Rooted every Thursday from 10am. They’re working on a biggish weaving\crochet project at the moment which will depict a local Hull delicacy! All will be revealed in due course.
This is Shelly. Shelly saw our gate was open and wandered in to see what she could buy. Shelly bought a good mix of freshly harvested veggies and herbs, including a portion of Hull’s best tasting cherry tomatoes! Thanks Shelly!
Beekeeping!
We learn together and with help each other out in local beekeeping community we are often called upon to deal with a swarm. We love bees!
Head down to Rooted on a Thursday from 10am. Rooted in Sunshine is our women’s group, they have a great, relaxing time with a bit of gardening, crafts and cooking. Like everything Rooted, it's mostly about the chats though.
After the Sahara type conditions of last week, we’re back this week with gusto! The heat has also accelerated the veggie’s growth. All of the beds have exploded into life!
Rooted in Sunshine is our women’s group. They meet every Thursday from 10 am for gardening, cooking and crafting. All women are welcome to join us, and all our sessions include a spot of lunch and a chance to chat. Give us a go!
Every Wednesday from 10am, you can come down to Rooted in Hull and help us with our work tending to the plants that feed us and learn about sustaining our planet through homegrown, healthy food. You might even be inspired to start growing your own food one day.
We have some fairly big news!
We’re moving!
Rooted in Hull is beginning the process of finding a new site in the city, moving to somewhere just as close to the city as we have always been and allowing us to continue the great work we have been doing in our community.
It doesn’t seem too long ago when we were lamenting the mileage clocked up by our Martin around the city on our eco powered bike! Well, now he has cycled the equivalent of a round trip to Addis Ababa, a quite ridiculous 5000 miles in the name of growing in the community!
A week in the Rooted sunshine has resulted in an explosion of planting, creativity and togetherness for the aptly named Rooted in Sunshine women’s group. All women are welcome to join us on Thursdays from 10 am, it’s free and includes a spot of community lunch around the table.
We are still holding on for 2 or 3 female acts to perform at this year’s summer festival. If this describes you or somebody you know then please get in touch with us here or email [email protected] and we can get you on in front of an audience who will probably love you.
