I manage a movie theater.
One day, I caught one of my ushers on the security cameras letting people in through a side door.
He was only 16.
A good kid... or so I thought.
Sneaking people in is grounds for immediate termination, maybe even criminal charges.
So I called him into my office, played the footage, and asked him to explain before I made any decisions.
He looked at the screen and quietly said,
"That's Mr. and Mrs. Toomey. Tuesday matinee."
Then he told me the whole story.
A few months earlier, the elderly couple had come to the box office to buy two senior tickets. They counted every dollar they had...
...and came up $4 short.
Without arguing or asking for help, they simply smiled, turned around, and started walking away.
As they left, the wife softly told her husband,
"It's alright. We'll just walk the mall instead."
My usher overheard it.
Something about the way they accepted it like they were used to life getting a little more expensive every year stuck with him.
So he made a decision.
Every Tuesday, when the theater was nearly empty, he quietly let them in through the side door.
And it didn't stop there.
He even bought them a medium popcorn with his own money.
One bag.
One drink.
Two straws.
Week after week.
I stared at this kid, who was absolutely convinced he was about to lose his job.
Honestly...
He had every reason to think that.
Instead, I picked up the phone and called the theater owner, who's 79 years old himself.
I told him everything.
There was a long silence.
Then he finally said,
"Give the Toomeys a lifetime pass... and give me that kid's name."
That one act of kindness ended up changing company policy.
Today, every one of our four theater locations offers free Tuesday matinees for seniors.
And the kid?
He still works here.
I let him be the one to tell the Toomeys.
Mrs. Toomey hugged him for so long...
...we actually had to delay the previews.
Not a single person in the audience complained.
Sometimes, breaking the rules isn't about doing the wrong thing.
Sometimes...
It's about reminding everyone what kindness looks like.

When Jewish families were deported to Auschwitz, children were often told to bring a small suitcase and one personal item.
Many chose a toy.
One survivor later described a little girl, about five years old, standing on the selection ramp after arrival.
An SS guard pointed left.
Her mother was sent right.
The girl did not understand.
She tried to follow her mother — but a prisoner whispered urgently:
“Give me the doll. Quickly.”
The child hesitated.
It was her favorite toy.
Her only comfort in a world that had collapsed.
Then she let it go.
The prisoner took the doll and pushed the girl toward the women’s line — where forced labor prisoners were sent.
Without the doll, she looked older.
More “useful.”
Less like a small child.
That moment likely saved her life.
Most children who arrived at Auschwitz were sent directly to the gas chambers.
Sometimes survival depended on a terrible choice:
To look less like a child.
A toy could mean death.
Letting it go could mean life.
