Amazon’s Prime Deal Days reminded me that I’ve never really talked about this. If you’re a consultant, you may already be recommending books or other products you use in your business. An Amazon Storefront gives you a place to share those recommendations, and if you’re accepted into Amazon’s Influencer Program, you can earn a commission when someone purchases through your links. You don’t have to think of yourself as an ‘influencer.’ You can simply recommend products you genuinely use and would recommend anyway. Most people don’t know this about me. I’ve been a social media trainer and consultant for 17 years, but becoming a consultant was never part of my plan. After leaving my job to complete an event management program, the job market crashed. I spent three years sending out hundreds of resumes. During that time, people began asking me to show them how to use social media. I taught them for free. I was so focused on finding another job that I didn’t recognize those requests as the beginning of a business. One day, I heard clearly, “You need to hold a class.” I knew that voice, so I acted. I reserved an inexpensive venue, emailed 20 people, and held a two-hour LinkedIn workshop. Five people came. At the end, I asked what they thought. They said, “It wasn’t enough.” My heart sank until they explained: “We want more.” That two-hour workshop became three-hour workshops and eventually six-hour LinkedIn boot camps. I changed my title to Social Media Trainer and Consultant, and I never turned back. I know how easy it is to overlook the value of what you already know. I also know what can happen when you finally recognize that value and build something from it. That is why I help women consultants turn their expertise into offers their ideal clients want.
