I don't think the Govt is doing anything wrong by introducing MDR on larger merchant UPI payments.
Govt revenue has to come from somewhere, especially if we want to keep funding freebies.
Yes, in the long run, higher transaction costs can affect businesses & economic growth.
But it's okay.
We shouldn't compromise on freebies. 😅
GOVT GUARANTEES ZERO CHARGES ON UPI UP TO ₹2,000
14 Sept: The govt legally barred banks & payment-system providers from charging for UPI payments of up to ₹2,000.
But UPI is already free. So what changes?
Basically, banks & payment companies are now legally "Barred" from charging for these payments.
What about UPI above ₹2,000?
Person to Person: still free, regardless of the amount.
Person to Merchant: from 15 Oct, a 0.4% MDR may apply.
(MDR is a processing fee paid by the merchant, not by you.)
1. Small merchants receiving up to ₹1 lakh a month via UPI QR :- No MDR
2. Other merchants :- 0.4% above ₹2,000, "Capped" at ₹300 for payments of ₹75,000 or more
3. Railways, telecom, insurance, fuel, electricity, water & piped natural gas :- ₹5 per eligible payment
4. Capital markets :- 0.02%, "Capped" at ₹300
Most important:
These charges are paid by merchants & service providers, not by customers.
So for ordinary users, UPI remains free.

The govt definitely needs to listen to people and more so to supporters with genuine concerns. But, unfortunately, the reality seems to be they listen to anarchists inviting them for tea but won't even acknowledge some genuine concerns of supporters. That's arrogance. The arrogance will cost not just them but India. That's my main concern.
