👏👏👏 Check out this very cool story on a Tumor secreted protein causing cachexia by altering TGF signaling, by my colleague and friend @BerrielDiaz and led by amazing postdoc @JulianoMacha17. Happy I could contribute a tiny bit 💞
🚨 New publication in Cancer Discovery!
Our study identifies ADAMTSL4 as a previously unknown driver of #CancerCachexia and a promising therapeutic target.
Congratulations to Juliano Machado, Stephan Herzig, Mauricio Berriel Diaz & all collaborators!

💫 I'm excited to share our new Comment @NatureRevEndo, calling to reframe #cancercachexia from malnutrition to treatable metabolic disease: nature.com/articles/s41574-0…
Emerging evidence shows that cachexia is a systemic metabolic disease - one that deserves earlier recognition, better monitoring and targeted interventions. Reframing cachexia in this way could help improve quality of life, treatment tolerance and, ultimately, patient outcomes.
😍 We'd love to hear your thoughts. How can we better integrate cachexia into routine cancer care and precision oncology?

ICYMI: What drives metabolic dysfunction and body wasting in cancer #cachexia?
doi.org/10.1172/JCI194687
Here, Pauline Morigny @MorignyPauline Maria Rohm @RohmMaria & team @HelmholtzMunich find high circulating ceramides define cancer cachexia in mice and patients. And targeting ceramide synthesis counteracts mitochondrial dysfunction, impaired energy homeostasis, and muscle atrophy in cachectic mice.
The image: In primary hepatocytes, ceramides interfere with mitochondrial branching and junctions, inducing cachexia-like phenotypes.

Amazing collaboration partners!! @BerrielDiaz @Laure_Bindels @ZeigererLab @OndrejKuda @Dorie00 @DrOlgaMunich and many more. Thank you 🙏
We show that blocking ceramide synthesis systemically or liver-specifically improves mitochondrial function in liver and muscle, counteracting muscle wasting.
