ALT We’re giving FIFA and Toronto a red card for: Unpaid Work While we appreciate the World Cup in bringing communities together, exploiting unpaid workers doesn’t need to be part of the game.

ALT Volunteers or unpaid workers? As we watch game after game, thousands of volunteers are working behind the scenes, filling essential roles to make the World Cup happen. This is critical work that allows the games in Toronto to take place. This work should be paid. Anti-Doping Broadcast Services Transportation Competition Management Hospitality Language Services Sustainability & Human Rights Partnership Management and more! FIFA volunteers must go through a competitive hiring and training process, are provided a uniform, and are required to work a minimum of eight shifts of six hours each. This sounds like a job to us!

ALT Why does FIFA use “volunteers”? The short answer is: PROFIT Not for host cities or their people, but for itself. By relying on volunteers, FIFA is able to squeeze even more money out of the games for its own pockets. FIFA is a billion-dollar organization. They will earn more than $12 billion in revenue from the 2026 World Cup. That’s about $3.5 billion in profit! Not to mention the $1 billion in Canadian taxpayer dollars going toward subsidizing the costs of hosting World Cup games in Toronto and Vancouver. Why didn’t our governments bargain for good jobs to be created from this event? Or more money for city services and infrastructure that Toronto desperately needs? PS: We didn’t even get subsidized tickets!

ALT For the love of soccer, we demand better for our city! 1. Good jobs for workers, especially young workers, whose unemployment rate is at a staggering 16.8%. 2. Social housing and shelters for people who are unhoused – instead of street clearing and criminalization. 3. Investments in citywide infrastructure like public transportation and lower transit fares, not more security and surveillance on the TTC. FIFA CAN CLEARLY AFFORD IT. If all 3,000 volunteer roles in Toronto were paid at $20/hr, it would cost FIFA about $2.9 million. That means they would still make $3.497 billion in profit. FIFA pay your workers!
