I am horrified at the news coming out of Oregon. There are no words to say when children are murdered at their school. It is every parents nightmare and no family should have to experience that pain. These tragedies deserve our prayers and action. We owe it to today’s victims, and every victim from gun violence, to do more.

Oregon used to preempt local carry bans, including at schools.
Giffords hated that, and encouraged the state to end that preemption. Oregon did what they asked.
Bend-La Pine Schools, the district that runs Silver Rail, banned carry by concealed handgun license holders on school grounds in December 2021. They were one of the first to do so.
Someone appears to have ignored that today, thank God, and saved lives.
Why is it every time there is a shooting in a state that has done what you asked, the response is to pretend like it's Montana or something?

You also helped make it easier for localities in Oregon to ban armed citizens from legally carrying on school grounds, and based on current reporting, an armed bystander is what stopped the suspect today.

1. The shooter used a shotgun, one not even heavily regulated in many European countries.
2. The shooter was a minor, was restricted from possessing that firearm in many different ways under Oregon law, all of which they ignored.
3. The shooter targeted a school you helped disarm, and bragged about doing so.
4. The shooter was stopped by an armed citizen who, thank God, ignored that law, and thus saved countless lives.

This school shooting raises serious questions about the effectiveness of gun free zones. Restricting lawful armed defense without adequate security measures can leave innocent people vulnerable. A private citizen intervened despite firearm restrictions, stopping the shooter saving lives. If criminals are willing to ignore laws against murder, what makes us believe they will obey gun free zone restrictions?
