In the middle of the House of Lords, in front of the throne, is a large red cushion with no back and no arms. It has been the most important seat in the chamber for 650 years, and it is a sack of wool. Edward III put it there in the 1300s. He ordered that his Lord Chancellor, when he sat in council, should sit on a bale of wool, so that nobody in the room could forget what the country was built on. By then wool paid for the Crown. The tax on every sack leaving the ports funded Edward's wars in France. The Battle of Crécy in 1346 was fought, in large part, to keep the wool route to Flanders open. It is still there. The Lord Speaker sits on it every day the House meets, with the mace laid behind. A peer who wants to join a debate has to get off it first and speak from the floor. In 1938 somebody finally looked inside. Over the centuries the wool had quietly gone, and the Woolsack was full of horsehair. It was rebuilt and restuffed with fleeces sent from every sheep country in the Empire, so that the thing the Lords sat on was British wool again. That is the symbol the nation chose for itself. Not a crown, a sword or a Bible. A sack of what came off a sheep's back. For 400 years English wool was the finest in Europe, and the merchants who sold it built the churches of the Cotswolds and Suffolk that tourists photograph today. The Lord Speaker will sit on a fleece this afternoon. The hill farmer who grew it is being paid less for it than it cost to shear.

Trawling through archives and I found this was the first post on this feed, September 9th 2017 - "A new hot-air machine intended to help dry wet pitches, Lord's, July 1931". The feed was originally covering all sports but soon became only for cricket. The post got nine views and no likes

NEW: Admiral Sir Tony Radakin has written an explosive op-ed for The Sunday Times. It is the first time the former chief of the defence staff has spoken since retiring last year. He said: 💥 Andy Burnham must appoint a "wartime cabinet" that will properly fund the military. 💥 The "peace dividend" is over - and the role of the PM is now a "quasi-wartime" one. 💥 The UK is "looking like a laggard" in Nato and we are bottom of the Nato league table to meet our military commitments. 💥 Warned Burnham to avoid antagonising Donald Trump - or else the USA could withdraw its "unconditional support" for the UK. 💥 Says the next PM must "protect the nuclear deterrent." Public order training, much like hostile environment/ first aid training is pretty standard for the BBC, ITN and other news organisations. Staff who may encounter disorder on their beat are often sent on this course. It's not unusual...

We have 2 converted farm buildings on our farmyard that we let out to holidaymakers. We never hit the Welsh government’s recent target of letting them out for over 182 days a year (even though they’re available all year) because we’re inland, not in the coast. They’ve just sent us a backdated premium (additional 50%) council tax bill for the last three years. It’s over £26,000. I am seriously concerned for my husband’s mental health. We can’t pay that. We can’t sell them as they’re not suitable for permanent accommodation. We can’t rent them out as they’re not classed as permanent accommodation. What the actual fuck are we meant to do here?!!

Posts have been circulating regarding an appeal for donations in relation to a lack of pillows at Glan Clwyd Hospital. I've checked with the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. Here's their response.

Re Tom Stoppard: my dad always loved retelling the story of how as editor at the London Evening Standard he interviewed Stoppard for a role on the paper. Stoppard had said he was interested in politics, but from Stoppard’s very broad brush answers he said he became increasingly suspicious of Stoppard’s actual political knowledge. So he asked Stoppard directly to name the current Home Secretary. Stoppard, not a man often lost for words, floundered eventually recovering to reply “I said I was interested in politics. Not obsessed with it.” Dad always said we are all the richer for the interview ending with Stoppard finding another career.
