Michigan doctors charged with g*nital mutilation of two 7-year-old Minnesota girls saw a judge throw the whole case out! ⠀ It happened at Burhani Medical Clinic in Livonia on February 3, 2017. Their mothers had brought them in from Minnesota. ⠀ Jumana Nagarwala, 44, of Northville, was the physician prosecutors said cut the girls' g*nitals. She had been working at Henry Ford. ⠀ Fakhruddin Attar, 53, owned the clinic and let her use it after hours. His wife Farida, 50, was accused of holding the girls' hands while it happened. ⠀ The girls thought they were on a special trip. One of them later told investigators their tummies hurt, and that a doctor was going to "get the germs out." ⠀ They'd been told to keep it secret. That night a parent booked two rooms at a hotel in Farmington Hills. ⠀ Cameras outside the clinic caught Nagarwala pulling in at 6:09 pm. Four minutes later, Attar handed her a white bag in the parking lot. ⠀ A doctor in Minnesota examined both girls afterward and found their g*nitals had been altered. Prosecutors called what was done to them heinous. ⠀ Nagarwala's lawyer said this was a religious custom of the Dawoodi Bohra, a Shia sect from India. She said Nagarwala used a scraper on their g*nitals, then gave a membrane to the parents to bury. ⠀ Prosecutors said nine girls had their g*nitals cut, not just these two. Four of them were from Michigan, and the others were from Minnesota and Illinois. ⠀ A federal prosecutor called the Minnesota girls the latest in a line going back to 2005. That same side told the court as many as 100 girls may have been cut over 12 years. ⠀ A lawyer for Nagarwala's own children alleged a Farmington Hills mosque had paid her to do it. Nagarwala's lawyer said that was false, and that the money was for a food bank. ⠀ Nagarwala was arrested on April 12, 2017. The Attars were arrested nine days later, at the clinic. ⠀ On November 20, 2018, US District Judge Bernard Friedman threw out the g*nital-mutilation counts. He wrote that Congress had overstepped, even while calling the practice despicable. ⠀ The Justice Department dropped its appeal in April 2019. Solicitor General Noel Francisco still called the practice "especially heinous." ⠀ By then Michigan had banned g*nital mutilation of girls, becoming the 26th state to do so.
