PUBLIC SAFETY ALERT
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office is warning our community about an increase in jewelry distraction thefts occurring throughout Sacramento County and surrounding areas.
The suspects carrying out these crimes often appear friendly and non-threatening, using conversation (such as asking for directions), fake gifts, hugs, "blessings," or requests for assistance to distract victims while secretly removing valuable jewelry. Suspects often replace stolen jewelry with fake items and use force in some cases. The majority of victims have been:โจโข Older adults (ages 50โ70+)โจโข Asian community membersโจโข Both men and women have been targeted
โจRecent incidents have been reported at and near:โจโข Costcoโจโข Sam's Clubโจโข Walmartโจโข Lowe'sโจโข Home Depotโจโข 99 Ranch Marketโจโข SF Marketโจโข Other high-traffic business areas
There have been instances where suspects have followed victims home before committing the theft.
Keep expensive jewelry covered or leave it at home whenever possible.โจNever allow strangers to place jewelry, scarves, or gifts around your neck.โจBe cautious of unsolicited hugs, blessings, or unnecessary physical contact.โจStay aware of your surroundings, especially in parking lots and shopping centers.โจIf something doesn't feel right, trust your instincts and leave the area.
If you become a victim or witness suspicious activity, report it immediately. If the crime is occurring, call 911. For non-emergency reporting, contact the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office at 916-874-5115.ย Preserve any evidence left at the scene, such as fake jewelry.ย Make note of vehicle and suspect descriptions.
Help us spread the word by sharing this post with your family, friends, and neighbors. Awareness is one of the best ways to prevent these crimes.

In recent weeks, the Placer County Sheriff's Office has seen a surge in scammers targeting the families and loved ones of incarcerated individuals.
These scammers falsely identify themselves as Placer County Sheriff's Office personnel and claim that payment is required to provide an incarcerated loved one with services such as rehabilitation or probation programs, bail, or even to have charges expunged.
Victims are often instructed to send money through payment platforms like Zelle or Venmo, or purchase retail gift cards. In some cases, scammers will call back claiming the first payment did not go through and demand an additional payment.
The Placer County Sheriff's Office will never make personal phone calls to demand payment for an incarcerated individual or request payment through mobile payment apps or gift cards.
If you receive a call like this, do not send money or provide personal information. Hang up immediately and report the incident to our non-emergency dispatch line at (530) 886-5375.
Please stay alert and share this message to help protect others in our community

One year ago, we launched the Blue Envelope Program to help foster safer, more compassionate interactions between law enforcement and members of the neurodiverse community, including individuals with autism and other cognitive or developmental conditions.
Over the past year, we've distributed nearly 1,000 Blue Envelope packets to community members, and we've already seen the program make a difference by helping create more understanding and meaningful interactions.
The program is voluntary, free, and provides simple tools such as a blue envelope, lanyard, wristband, and seat belt cover that can discreetly let law enforcement know someone may benefit from extra patience or a different communication approach. These small items can help make encounters safer, less stressful, and more positive for everyone involved.
If you or someone you know could benefit from the program, Blue Envelope packets are still available throughout Placer County.
Learn more or find a pickup location: placer.ca.gov/BlueEnvelope
Together with our law enforcement and community partners, we're proud to continue growing this program and ensure its available to anyone who may benefit.
