GOES is tankingggg. The aurora is charging up fast! Not a whole lot on the Maine cam except for maybe a faint glow, but views should improve fairly soon

Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's Martian Moons eXploration mission could unlock some of the moons' mysteries and help scientists better understand Mars' history and our own planet.
"MMX will be the first spacecraft ever to return to Earth from the Mars system," said Tom Statler, NASA's MMX program executive and scientist, during a pre-launch press conference. "The Phobos samples will be historic. The first samples from a moon other than Earth's moon," he added.
Scheduled to lift off as early as Monday, Oct. 19, at 3:41 p.m. EDT from the JAXA Tanegashima Space Center, MMX is a first-of-its-kind mission that will not only study the moons of Mars but bring samples back to Earth.

The Japanese MMX mission to #Mars has successfully launched.
This amazing mission will bring back samples from the Martian moon Phobos which will provide key insights into Mars’ history
Will b first round trip demo ever from the Martian system. Super congrats to JAXA!

Most metals turn brittle in extreme cold.
UC Berkeley and Oxford just found two that don't.
The materials: niobium-titanium alloys, the same family used in MRI machine magnets.
At −253°C (−424°F, near absolute zero), most body-centered cubic metals crack. Their dislocations (the line defects that let metal bend) freeze up.
These alloys do something different.
Nanoscale crystal twinning kicks in. Boundaries between crystal grains generate new dislocations on demand, absorbing stress around any crack that tries to form.
The result: no brittle transition. Down to liquid-hydrogen temperatures.
Tested using a neutron beam at the ISIS facility in Oxfordshire while pulling samples at cryogenic temperatures.
Applications: hydrogen fuel tanks, cryogenic engines, space structures.

Kepler-22b is thought to be a super-Earth water world. This exhilarating exoplanet is located 587 light-years from Earth.
22b was the first exoplanet ever found to orbit in the ‘habitable zone’. Imagine the incredible creatures that could exist in its immense ocean.
Amazing.
Congrats to @JAXA_En on MMX! By returning samples from Phobos, Mars’ larger moon, the mission will add to decades of Mars exploration and help shape future discoveries and potential crewed missions to the Red Planet.

JAXA's MMX has separated from the 2nd stage and is on its way to Phobos and Deimos, the moons of Mars. The 13 scientific instruments include 2 from the US and one from CNES/DLR. Arriving at Mars in August 2027. Will collect samples from Phobos, returning them to Earth in 2031.

Liftoff! Congratulations to @JAXA_en, @NASA, and the entire MMX team. Once MMX reaches Phobos, our P-Sampler will collect surface material using high-pressure, ultra-pure nitrogen gas. Mounted on one of the MMX lander’s four legs, the P-Sampler is designed to complete sampling in a matter of seconds: bit.ly/4eHejFL

We inspect and maintain aircraft, ships and vehicle fleets. Why should spacecraft be any different?
HEO CEO @drwillcrowe explains why inspection and maintenance are becoming essential to commercial space, and how non-Earth imaging can help operators reduce costs and extend spacecraft lifetimes. Through partnerships like HEO’s with Astroscale, we’re adding the inspection layer needed to make on-orbit maintenance a reality.

🔭 JWST Maps Weather Patterns on a Single-Pixel World!
Using James Webb Space Telescope data, researchers at Trinity College Dublin mapped three distinct, recurring weather states on SIMP 0136—a brown dwarf 20 light-years away. Although this world appears as a single pixel of light, Webb’s observations revealed that shifting temperatures and cloud structures create rotating patterns of hot, thin clouds alongside cooler, thick cloud decks. Traveling across space for two decades, this ancient light proves we can decode complex alien weather systems across interstellar distances! 🌦️🌌✨

Flight-proven on the International Space Station.
For roughly six months, our S2 dual robotic arm system operated in the real space environment. The long-duration endurance test proved the reliability of many of the subsystems we developed in-house, including actuators, flight computers, and power systems.
This is what matters in space hardware. It has to keep working in orbit, not just work once in a lab.
With the capabilities we built and proved through S2, we can move beyond CGI concepts and execute real on-orbit servicing missions for satellite constellations in low Earth orbit.
