A HOUSED CITY STARTS WITH LOCAL ACTION. Cape Town’s housing crisis requires urgent, practical intervention. Relying solely on national government to resolve the crisis will not be enough. The City and the Western Cape Government have a responsibility to use the powers, resources and available mechanisms at their disposal to accelerate housing delivery and expand access to affordable housing. GOOD’s Housed City pledge calls for a more proactive approach to housing, one that prioritises the right to adequate housing, makes better use of public land and places people’s needs above political interests. Access to housing is a fundamental right, not a privilege. We need practical solutions, greater accountability and coordinated action across all spheres of government to ensure that more people can access safe, affordable homes. A Housed City starts with dignity, security and accountability. 🏠 City-owned flats and Community Residential Units must be properly maintained to ensure residents have access to safe and dignified housing. Yet, many facilities remain neglected, while the transfer of ownership of qualifying Council-owned homes continues too slowly and in some areas, not at all.
