I was declined permanent residency *before* the Takaichi government, because my *wife* was late making two national insurance payments in 2017 (she subsequently paid them). I argued in the Mainichi that the Abe govt. unofficially tightened the rules. mainichi.jp/english/articles…

The richest man on planet Earth is moaning about the declining number of births. Speaking for many Americans, I think with the cost of groceries and housing so high (some people living in their used cars), birth control must seem like a sacrament.
You spelled Adams’s Japanese name incorrectly. It was Miura Anjin, not “Anjinan”.
Which reminds me — I saw a fantastic play about Adams in Osaka about 15 years ago.

In 1993 I spent a total of four months in Sarajevo during the siege, with very little food. At first I fantasised about expensive meals at the Savoy, etc. Soon, though, I realised that all I really wanted when I got home was this. Wonderful.

I was encouraged this week to see the leaders of the frontier labs agree on the need for them to slow down the pace of AI development. Given the stakes, it’s a good and necessary first step.
But I’m even more encouraged by the growing recognition that how this powerful new technology develops should be at the center of our public debate.
I’ve been watching the progress on AI for over a decade now, and one thing that’s clear to me is that the potential impact of this technology is not overhyped. It’s also moving at lightning speed – and even faster than those who are engineering it can keep up with.
I’m not an AI accelerationist who believes it will lead to some techno-utopia, and I’m not a doomer who thinks it will inevitably lead to humanity’s destruction.
But whether this technology results in amazing breakthroughs in medicine, energy and education or unleashes huge economic disruptions, greater inequality, and potential catastrophe will depend on the choices that we make right now – choices that should be made not just by the companies involved, but by all of us.

Japan wants foreign talent—and then does everything possible to make foreigners leave. It’s not logical but it’s politically practical. And it’s stupid. But Japan Inc. never learns.
🧑🏻🔬
During COVID, Japan basically shut itself off from the non-Japanese world for two years, contributing to financial disasters and bankruptcies that companies are still dealing with. Now it has effectively passed new rules that close the country off again.
In a country with some of the lowest wages in the G7, demanding that foreigners applying for permanent residency earn more than the typical Japanese worker seems unreasonable. Add stipulations such as decades of pension payments and requirements to pass a Japanese-language test at a very high proficiency level, and permanent residency becomes effectively out of reach for most people already here.
So ask yourself: How many people are willing to spend 10 years of their lives living here for only a slim chance of getting permanent residency? Why learn the language? Why invest your money, time, and future in a country that makes it so difficult for you to stay?
And this is happening in a country with a rapidly declining population, a rapidly growing elderly population, and a serious labor shortage.
What happens when there aren’t enough foreigners willing to come here to work in nursing homes, care for the elderly, and fill the jobs that Japanese workers themselves aren’t filling?
Eventually Japan will have to backtrack. But when it does, who will trust this government enough to come back and build a life here?
Of course, Takaichi seems determined to imitate her manly hero, Donald Trump, who has already helped turn America into Trumpistan—a sham democracy and, in my view, an economic disaster.
It’s a shame to watch Japan start down the same road and turn itself into Japanistan.
It’s ass-backwards Galápagos thinking.
But there we are.

Sadly it will.
Unless you’re working at a blue-chip company etc, you can basically forget PR. Which is probably what Takaichi wants.
