Have you ever heard the wildest illegal aliens in Europe's forests? 👽🦌
Sika deer in the rut. Sound on! 🔊
Red deer roar – sika stags whistle, squeal, scream and moan.
The overlay makes their calls visible: colour = pitch, brightness = loudness. 🧵
Often all of it within a single call. Few deer in Europe have such a wide acoustic range during the rut.
Recorded by my dad's trail camera, spectrograms overlaid by me.
And "alien"? That's the EU's legal term: sika deer are native to East Asia and since 2025 have been on the list of "invasive alien species". A topic many people feel strongly about.

Happy 100th, Sir David Attenborough. 🌿
@derKirchner spent years trying to interview him – every reply gracious, handwritten, and a polite no. So he turned rejection into a love letter, talking to people Sir David shaped. Hats off, Andreas.

#FindingSirDavid
Wild Boar in 3D 🐗
Depth Anything 3 transforms 2D camera trap images into measurable 3D space:
→ Automated metric measurements
→ Distance sampling without markers
→ Morphometrics without invasive field work
Game-changer for wildlife monitoring!

New paper out: How AI could enhance biodiversity in energy planning? We analyzed wind projects in Austria - found huge data gaps in environmental assessments. AI-supported biodiversity monitoring (bioacoustics, camera traps, eDNA) could change the game. doi.org/10.1080/14615517.202…

Great to see our research on AI, invasive plants and cool robots covered. 🌿👍🏻

How fast do our roe deer recover after capture and tagging? Thanks to Jonas Stiegler we could show that these effects diminish within 4-7 days in 42 mammal species and even more quickly for animals in high human activity areas

Finally we got our #SilentCities dataset published!
With 261 colleagues around the globe we collected audio when human isolation during the #covid19 pandemic had drastically changed the #soundscape of the urban ecosystem. Birds vs cars #tech4wildlife

Perfect use for our #audiomoth during lockdown! @OpenAcoustics
Bat specimen as fancy deco object? I can‘t believe this is legal and the shop is really in Vienna. Still crazy to get this as Instagram advertisement.

In the video category, we honor @arribada_i's thermal camera traps that detect arboreal species' nocturnal activity, @RobinSandfort's AI + segmentation on wild boar piglet videos, and @FrouinMouy's HD video + acoustic imaging sonar and recording to study elephant seals.
From bioacoustic recording to lek counts - So great to work for this amazing Western Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus L.) in the Austrian Alps. #tech4wildlife @OpenAcoustics @WILDLABSNET
Checking out camera trap images just got so much more colourful. 🐗🌈Meta just released its Segment Anything Model 2 (SAM 2) and it plays nicely with our wild boar piglets.

#Deer255 died this spring in the after migrating a record 3,300 miles across 7 spring and 7 fall migrations. For nearly 11 years, she showed us how big migrations can be, connecting the Red Desert, Prospect Mountains, Pinedale, Jackson Hole, Yellowstone, and Island Park, Idaho

ALT Deer 255 and her fawns in the Prospect Mountains during her fall 2020 migration. (Ben Kraushaar)

ALT Deer 255’s migration map shows a remarkable fidelity to her route year after year. Although her summer ranges varied between Island Park, Idaho and Jackson Hole, Wyoming, her winter ranges were always in the Leucite Hills of the Red Desert near Superior, Wyoming. 🏆 Gabriel Jorgewich-Cohen has shown in his dissertation that turtles communicate acoustically. The postdoctoral researcher at the UZH Paleontological Institute has been awarded the Prix Schläfli Biology by @scnatCH for this discovery: news.uzh.ch/en/articles/news…
