Like a stadium full of sports fans doing the wave, neurons coordinate their electrical signals in rhythmic patterns that sweep across the cortex, the brain’s outermost layer. Recent studies in humans and animals have shown these patterns, called traveling waves, can take on complex shapes, among them a rotating spiral that has been observed during deep sleep, memory retrieval, and other brain processes. Now, a study has captured the fast-spinning waves spanning whole brains, offering clues to how they’re organized and what they might do. Learn more: scim.ag/4uItTq0

Now out in @NatureNeuro What happens to the brain’s body map when a body-part is removed? Scanning patients before and up to 5 yrs after undergoing an arm amputation, we discovered the brain’s body map is strikingly preserved despite amputation nature.com/articles/s41593-0… 🧵1/18

Congratulations to our Human Neural Circuitry team; bit.ly/4dEyX7Z publishes today in Science! This was the hardest challenge of my career, but one of the most rewarding, after years of rebuilding– & for myself, expanding my inpatient neuropsychiatry work to the service of basic discovery: med.stanford.edu/news/all-ne… I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with the amazing lead authors Isaac Kauvar @ikauvar, Ethan Richman, and Tony Liu @liutony66, and with equally brilliant faculty colleagues in our HNC program: Carolyn Rodriguez @CRodriguezMDPhD, Paul Nuyujukian, and Vivek Buch @VivekBuchMD, along with many other key collaborators spanning hospital and laboratory. xitter.cf/KarlDeisseroth/status/…
The next gen of HNC is already on the way! Left to right: @SamVesuna (MD PhD psychiatry resident), @ikauvar (PhD neuroengineer), @chibyanada (program manager extraordinaire), & @liutony66 (bioengineering PhD student). New/improved in all ways, with better album cover picture too.

Our paper has been published @NatureGenet! Through new statistical methods, we shed light on fundamental questions about cellular response to genetic perturbations. Our work is a substantial advance towards rigorous characterization and comparison of massive perturbation atlases.
How do genetic perturbations change cells? How are these effects shaped by cell type and dosage? How do we best extract insight from modern massive perturbation atlases? Im pleased to share a new preprint where we develop a suite of statistical approaches to these Qs (link below)
