COMPUTE!'s Gazette — October 2026 Digital Edition is out the door!
Every collector has a ghost story. This month, we checked.
Our cover story, The Machine That Never Died, goes looking for the body: for forty-five years everyone knew that one line of BASIC could kill a Commodore PET. We traced the legend from Commodore's own engineers through forty years of magazines, manuals, and folklore to find out what software can and can't actually do to 8-bit hardware.
Also in this issue:
Sleuth 64 — an all-BASIC murder mystery type-in for the Commodore 64, with a new killer every game based off the MS-DOS Classic
Type-In Time Machine — Bryon Thur's new monthly column debuts with Crossroads from the December 1987 Gazette
MLX32 Version 1.1 — a reader-found bug, diagnosed and fixed, with the update on this month's disk
Black Cave reviewed — Marcus Albers on Victor Castro's new C64 game
The business cards are back — ten vendors in our back-page directory, now a regular feature
Gazette Clubs — our pilot user groups are launching in Phoenix, Houston, and Cleveland/Akron. Live nearby? Write to [email protected]
Plus Back to BASIC Part 6, Dialed Back, MEGA65 Digest, the FujiNet Report, Micro Missions, and Letters — 100 pages.
It's never too late to subscribe! New subscriptions begin with the November printed edition, and every new subscriber gets the October digital edition free. Contents subject to change.

Less than 3 hours away, take a break from your Sunday and let’s chat about Omarchy. @NixFred and I will be your guides. If you have any questions specific to building plugins bring them. We have about 60 people who have RSVP’ed! Should be fun.

Seeing some pushback on Project Zenit for bundling tools like Oh My Posh into Windows. The criticism is fair: Microsoft shouldn't decide which tools we run, and Windows shouldn't ship bloat. I agree with that. But there's a side to this most people are missing.
In most companies, you don't just install what you want. IT locks down machines. Every tool, even something as small as Oh My Posh, has to clear a review and whitelist process first. That can take months, if it happens at all.
When Microsoft ships a tool inside Windows itself, it skips that whole process. For developers stuck behind corporate policy, that's the difference between using the tool and never getting approval to touch it.
Both things are true at once. Microsoft shouldn't be the one deciding our setup. And for a lot of developers, this is the only realistic way they ever get to use tools like this at all.
The good news? You can always uninstall it and go about your day. The difference is, now everyone gets to, approved or not.

Hey @Avis, we’ve been waiting almost an hour for the car rental shuttle after getting off the cruise ship. It’s picked up two loads of people while we’ve been waiting. You knew how many rentals you have. Why make us wait, let alone outside in the Florida heat? #NotImpressed

Just heard that John C Dvorak passed away on Monday.
I fondly remember reading his column in PC Magazine back in the late 80s.
May his memory be a blessing.
