Back from a nice week in North Norfolk. Highlight birdwise was the long staying Black-winged Kite on the Hempstead Marshes. It was very distant so these heavily cropped video stills are the best I could manage

In this week's episode of The BirdGuides Podcast, David, Ian and Josh are joined by the RSPB's Mark Thomas to talk about the exciting recent news that six Montagu's Harrier chicks fledged in England this summer: f.mtr.cool/hfibb16hi6
Thanks to @Adamdbassett for saving me trawling through my moth books to work this one out! This Evergestis limbata flew into the house late last night. Poor photo as it was quite high up so I had to hold the phone above my head and hope it was in frame.

Brilliant evening lecture yesterday from BBC member @LukeMarriner_1 on the subject of “Fabulous Fair Isle: A ringing season to remember in a birding Mecca!”.Fascinating stuff and the WiFi connection out to Fair Isle held up beautifully!

Great news! @BBCFOUR4 will be marking Bill Oddie's unique wildlife TV career on the evening of Sunday 16th August: starting at 7pm with The Best of Bill Oddie Goes Wild, followed by Birding with Bill Oddie: Bill’s Beginnings, and finally Bill Oddie’s Top Ten Birds. Please RT!
Some of my favourite books by Bill Oddie, which helped inspire my love of birds and nature, along with his entertaining programmes. Gone Birding was my favourite book and I used to re-borrow it from the library all the time until finally buying a copy. A very sad loss.
This Clouded Yellow visited our garden briefly this morning. Unfortunately it wouldn’t settle for more than a second on each plant so this was the best photo I managed as it checked out the buddleia.

Total scum destroying house Martin nests in Mattishall, Norfolk,
They must be easy to find and prosecute surely! 😡@RSPCA_official @ChrisGPackham @MeganMcCubbin @WriterHannahBT @NorfolkCC
We had a nice relaxing long weekend in North Norfolk a couple of weeks ago. I made the mistake of working all day just before we left in the red warning temperatures & spent the first day & a half with heat stroke 🥵 A Quail calling from a field next to the cottage was a bonus!
Just before we went away for a long weekend in Norfolk at the end of June, 2 Swifts started showing an interest in our box. The Sparrows had just fledged a brood and now the Swifts were making it clear they were after it. A week later they were going inside! @SaveourSwifts
Hobby over the garden a couple of days ago. They have been getting quite regular over the last week so presumably feeding young. The evening before this, one was hunting Summer Chafers around an Oak tree in the nearby meadows.

Many thanks Nick for our early morning trip over Lodge Hill escarpment and its surrounding farmland, some of which has been supported through the BBC winter bird feeding and also through our members engaging with Nick’s Project 👉 chilterns.org.uk/flagship-pr…

‘Marsh Harrier male, Arnold’s Marsh’
acrylic, 44 x 34 cms.
A male Marsh Harrier flies over Arnold’s Marsh, mobbed by some of the resident Avocets and Lapwings. The Marsh lies between the villages of Cley-next-the Sea and Salthouse on the North Norfolk coast.
