Love the new iPad layout in Codex Remote! Good to see that more and more companies are taking iPad UIs a bit more seriously lately (because of the iPhone Duo effect…?)

Okay... thats the 4th straight hour of asking Opus 5.5 to make videos, code a game, fix bugs, build features, and whatever else comes to mind... I'd hate to see what this has done to my weekly usage... oh 1% more. Feels too good to last.

I haven't heard anyone talk about this yet but Opus 5.5 may be the first model that can actually design. I'm getting wild one shot results with website design. No AI whiff to it at all.

I'm so happy the iPhone Duo released after agentic coding became a thing. I've been fighting this same battle. Alex shows how tricky it is with 1 button. Now imagine big iPad support, iPad mini support, iPhone portrait and landscape support, and the finally Dup support closed in 3 orientations, and open in 3 orientations.

I'm still working on this, but my current thought about the iPhone Duo is that the better experience is a split view with tab bar vs a side bar with wider content.

I'd originally imaged a full iPad experience when unfolded but the Duos sidebar is limited to a max of 7 items and the overall size feels more geared towards this. I've tried both extensively and much preferred this.

I'm so here for an Apple Whoop competitor. I honestly find the Whoop app poorly designed. It doesn't look or feel great. I'd also love what is effectively the health tracking of an Apple Watch but with a much longer battery life, and something I can wear in sports without worrying I'll clock someone.

The more I optimize for Duo the more I believe they should have gone for a centre aligned Dynamic Island and not the hole punch. The hole punch feels like a hardware limitation they had to settle for and after that they had to make the whole of the UI work with it.

Thus they added the right vertical space. Top right buttons look odd, Dynamic Island UI looks worse and is super small, and there's so much more when you really get into it that would have just worked better with the normal status bar UI. The overall asymmetric layout across multiple orientations causes a variety of unusual UI. Forcing buttons that have titles to sit in a vertical space in which there is no room for titles is a terrible accessibility choice. The only layout this new status bar makes sense in is unfolded full screen, as it afford more vertical space for the content. I believe they've been very clever here and really tried to sell this, but it wasn't their ideal thing. I hope that the next generation of Duo has Face ID and returns the status bar back to normal, except when unfolded, in which case it can use the new orientation.

The perfect Duo uses FaceID on both screens. This would mean a center aligned Dynamic Island on the front and an under the screen Dynamic Island on the left side when opened. Potentially allowing more space on the right half for 3 cameras vs 2. Only using the vertical status bar when opened. Not doubt a really hard hardware ask but this would fix all issues I have with it.

More iPhone Duo dev tips, starting with... Here I have a custom side panel transition and it gets the right side space for the vertical bar even though we know it doesn't need it. Opt out with: preferredVerticalBarBehavior = .disabled.

The OS will only put buttons in the vertical bar if they will fit, so you see here that "Start" is too long and won't fit. Fix this with UIBarButtonItem.axisBehavior = .verticalPreferred and then using the new UITraitCollection.systemTraitsAffectingVerticalBarEdge observable make the button use and icon instead of a title.

On the smallest screen size of the Duo, your top-right bar button items will do this. To fix this put your buttons in navigationItem.pinnedTrailingGroup instead of rightBarButtonItems.
