Jan Demczur clocked in at 6 a.m. on September 11, 2001, the same way he had for years: green bucket, rags, brass squeegee. He was a window washer from Poland who had made the World Trade Center his workplace. That morning he finished the high floors early, grabbed coffee in the 44th-floor sky lobby, then stepped into an express elevator with five other men. The plane hit. The car jerked, dropped, then stopped in the shaft. Smoke came in. They pried the doors open and found a blank wall marked “50.” The elevator wasn’t meant to stop there. There was no door. No knife.
