Hey, I'm Rob. I help roll out new software, and I never let anyone forget the frontline has to live with it.

Please stop using technical jargon when teaching end users. Keep it simple and talk like you get outside every now and then

Teach with kindness. Everyone learns at different paces

It'd be nice if all the integrations were in my backyard

Another day, another roll out. Friendly reminder to think of your end users!

Pitch deck slide 1: TAM. Slide 2: unit economics. Slide 3: the time the ice cream truck ran out of my flavor and I learned supply chain risk firsthand

Listen to @tinytechfox ! Go for a walk!!!! There was a study from Stanford back in 2014 titled: "Give Your Ideas Some Legs: The Positive Effect of Walking on Creative Thinking" It found walking boosts creative output by 60%. And that doesn't even scratch the health benefits
Saturday reminder that you’re allowed to be a person before you’re a builder ✨ Go outside. Get a coffee. Make something weird. Follow a thought that has absolutely no business value. Some of the best ideas need a little room to wander 🌿

Got a "this isn't so bad" from an originally reluctant end user today. I'll count that as my success this week

I like to throw in a few lines from the book I'm reading when I teach. Used this gem from @LordGrimdark yesterday. The Exchange Logen: "Then you've got the chance to do better next time. Jezal: "Next time?" Logen: "Course. Doing better next time. That's what life is."

I find implementation resistance spikes when you change the hardware along with the software. If a field team uses Apple and you hand them an Android tablet for work you have just introduced a compounding variable. Sometimes it's unavoidable, but keep it simple if you can

I feel most of what looks like resistance to new software is people mad at themselves. They've done a task one way for years, and when it suddenly feels hard, they take it personally. Learning takes time, and there's no shame in being bad at something new for a while

Ha. One of the best pieces of advice for life is find someone that treats you like your Chinese supplier does!

Two branches. Same software, same training. The only real difference was the leader — one believed in it, one didn't. Everyone could tell. The branch with the believer adopted weeks faster. It's never really about the software. It's about who's standing in front of the room.

Visibility beats availabilty. I still find staff running reports in Excel that the system I train in builds in one click. Excel is just familiar. Old habits beat better tools more often than bad ones. If you want the switch to stick, make the easy way visible, not just available.

Learning a new software can be tough for end users. I like to describe it like drinking from a fire hose. Remember when teaching not to turn the hose all the way on at once!

I never start training with the software. I start with their day: the shift, the tasks they already do in order, and I slot the new system in exactly where it happens. It stops being "a new thing to learn" and just becomes part of a day they already know.
