It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.
To understand why this is so appalling, it’s important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically.
Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administration’s fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country.
Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone — all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case.
Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And it’s not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies — from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve.
In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omar’s life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and she’s been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota.
The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.

Tonight, fires are raging around St Petersburg after another Ukrainian drone attack. All because a 74-year-old man in the Kremlin decided that conquering his neighbours was more important than giving his own people a future.
Imagine what Russia could have been. Your children studying at universities in Paris, Oxford or Berlin. Families spending summers on the Mediterranean, skiing in the Alps, discovering Rome, Barcelona and Copenhagen. Russian scientists working alongside Europe's finest minds. Businesses flourishing, borders opening, young Russians falling in love, travelling freely and building prosperous lives in the world's most extraordinary neighbourhood.
And Russia's vast oil wealth could have continued filling the national savings account, building a financial cushion for a rainy day and securing the prosperity of future generations. Instead, that fortune has been drained by war, and the country's financial future has been mortgaged to one man's imperial ambitions.
You had an entire continent on your doorstep, ready to trade, cooperate and prosper.
Instead, you have sanctions, burning oil facilities, military funerals, censorship and a generation sacrificed to one elderly man's imperial fantasies. Children raised on militaristic propaganda, families struggling with poverty and alcoholism, and young men sent to die in Ukrainian fields.
And your great international friendship? North Korea. A miserable dictatorship famous for prison camps, hunger, compulsory displays of loyalty and children taught to march in formation.
Now Russia's future is increasingly tied to the failed Trump regime. And if you believe a man whose business empire has seen six corporate bankruptcies involving casinos and hotels is going to rescue the Russian economy, you may be in for another disappointment. Sorry, but Donald Trump is not Russia's financial salvation.
You could have shared Europe's prosperity. Instead, Putin has brought you closer to Pyongyang, with a bankrupt casino magnate as your supposed lifeline.
What a catastrophic waste of a great country's future.
Oh well, anyway.
BREAKING: Ukraine has just struck the St. Petersburg oil port and set it ablaze, with massive fires rising, one of Russia's largest fuel storage and export facilities.
Zelensky said two days ago that Ukraine will restart major strikes on Russian energy. "The block on attacking refineries is out. We're done."

New in PN: Who wants to visit an authoritarian America?
"Data shows that the United States is on its way to being as unpopular a tourist destination as Russia, and for roughly the same reasons. BREAKING: Billionaire Sir Richard Branson unleashes a SCORCHING attack on Trump and his disgusting cozying up to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
This is EXACTLY the kind of thing that gets under Trump's skin...
"I thought I’d never have to say this in my lifetime, but this is 2026, and sadly nothing is what it used to be," Branson, the founder of Virgin Group, wrote on LinkedIn. "The Trump administration has become an appeaser to autocrats and dictators, putting their personal whims before the best interests of the American people and those of the free world. What is it about Putin that President Trump fawns over?"
"How will America’s allies ever be able to trust this administration again when they are now turning against them at a time of war and suffering?" he asked.
Trump has repeatedly betrayed our Ukrainian allies in recent days. First, he announced a stunning deal with Putin to allow millions of barrels of diesel into the global markets, a move that will directly pump money into the Russian war machine. Then, he began a concerted smear campaign against President Zelenskyy and said that Putin is easier to deal with.
The backstabbing escalated when Washington failed to provide its usual early warning to Kyiv of an incoming Russian ballistic missile attack. Now, it appears that the White House ordered a temporary disruption of Starshield, a military version of Elon Musk's Starlink that the Ukrainian armed forces rely upon.
"The slowdown of Starlink/Starshield and the inexplicable lack of advance warning of Russian missile launches have already caused Ukrainian civilians to die unnecessarily," wrote Branson. "How much worse can it get?"
"If one thing is clear it’s that European leaders must overcome the initial shock about Trump’s recent actions and step up to the plate. It’s as much about Europe’s freedom as it is about Ukraine’s sovereignty. Both are worth fighting for," he continued. "All options should be on the table now, from the transfer of frozen Russian assets to Ukraine to the delivery of advanced weapons systems such as Germany’s Taurus."
"Why oh why is this happening? We cannot let the free world be dismantled before our very eyes," Branson concluded.
We couldn't agree more. Trump is an enemy to Ukraine, an enemy to democracy, and an enemy to the American people. When Democrats retake power, we have our work cut out for us. Every last trace of this monstrous man's legacy must be erased.
Please ❤️ and share if you think that Trump is Putin's puppet!

If an amendment to your constitution results in children routinely being shot in school then it's time to amend it again.
Three children and a teacher killed in shooting by 16-year-old at Oregon primary school - follow live bbc.in/4sa7rq6
This!
The day is coming - and they’ve left an indelible record.
This is not complicated!
Russia has roughly 140 million people. Iran has around 90 million. MAGA has around 77 million and falling. It is not America, but a political faction inside it, and one already showing signs of fraying.
Against them stands democratic America, Canada, Britain, Europe, Australia and the wider allied world: well over a billion people, commanding vastly greater wealth, technology, capital, military capability, universities, institutions and industrial capacity.
Yet somehow the larger side has allowed itself to look frightened.
Russia is dangerous, certainly. But much of its best military capacity has already been consumed in Ukraine. Iran can cause enormous disruption, but it is hardly an economic or technological superpower.
And then there is MAGA: the odd member of this axis because it operates inside the United States.
Its political base has been sold a story of national revival by a remarkably small collection of billionaires and ideologues who would quite like lower taxes, weaker regulation and fewer constraints on their power, even if dismantling those constraints weakens the Western system that made their fortunes possible.
MAGA should also understand exactly what it is choosing to become. Governments change. Presidents leave office. Political movements fracture. The institutions they attack do not simply vanish with them.
There will be an ordinary morning after Trump. Courts will still open. Elections will still be held. European regulators will still regulate. Allied governments will still choose where to buy weapons, technology and energy. Contracts will still be written. Laws will still apply. And countries with long institutional memories will remember very clearly who threatened them, who helped them and who tried to tear the system apart.
That is the part MAGA seems to misunderstand. It is behaving as though this moment is permanent. It is not.
The democratic world is larger than Trump, larger than MAGA and considerably older than both. Its institutions were built precisely so that one faction, one government or one collection of billionaires cannot simply bulldoze the rules and expect everyone else to shrug forever.
That is the real picture. Disruption is not strength. And temporary power is not permanent power.
The extraordinary achievement of this axis has been convincing more than a billion people on the stronger side to behave as though a much smaller coalition holds all the cards.
It does not.
Perhaps it is time the democratic world remembered who is actually outnumbered.
And perhaps MAGA should remember that history continues after the people who thought they owned it are gone.

Ukraine has had enough.
Zelenskyy tells the FT that the restraint on striking Russian oil refineries is over: “We’re done.”
Kyiv paused its refinery campaign for three days under pressure from Washington. Russia kept bombing Ukraine.
Then Starlink/Starshield was suddenly restricted. Ukraine also failed to receive the usual advance warning of incoming Russian ballistic missiles. Six Ukrainians were killed.
The explanations from the American side? A “technical glitch” and “bad weather.” Zelenskyy says he no longer believes this was technical. It was a decision.
Meanwhile, Trump is pursuing Russian diesel, pressuring Ukraine rather than Russia, and, according to Zelenskyy, displaying the same instinctive admiration for Putin that he shows for autocrats and extreme wealth.
Think about the strategic insanity:
Protect Russia’s refineries. Pressure the country Russia is bombing. Weaken its warning systems. Then buy Russia’s fuel.
Ukraine has finally reached the obvious conclusion.
Hit the refineries.

The West is waking up to a simple fact: MAGA chose Russia.
For eighty years, Americans knew Moscow was the adversary. Truman knew it. Kennedy knew it. Reagan called the Soviet Union an evil empire. American soldiers prepared to stop Russian armour in Europe, taxpayers financed NATO, and intelligence officers spent careers penetrating the Kremlin.
Russia never changed. It invaded Georgia, seized Crimea, poisoned opponents, interfered in Western elections, attacked Western institutions, and launched the largest war in Europe since 1945.
What changed was part of America.
Trump spent years shouting “Russia, Russia, Russia” and “hoax”. It was never a hoax. Russian interference was real. The campaign to weaken NATO, divide America, discredit institutions and separate the US from Europe was real.
The Kremlin failed to break the West from outside. MAGA started helping from within.
So congratulations, Russia. You lost the Cold War, then found Americans willing to attack the alliance that defeated you and call it patriotism.
Quite a victory.
