Depression doesn’t happen when a person is sad. Depression happens when a person intentionally chooses to rupture the link between their mind and their heart because the things of the mind and senses seem at the time to poison the heart. It’s a separation between oneself and the world, and in that way, much like death. One can still feel things while depressed. There is room for sadness, hunger, tiredness, ambition, regret, and even positive emotions like joy. They just don’t actually do anything for the depressed person. The one thing you can’t feel while depressed is contentment. I’m creating this term called antidepression. It’s when one embraces as close of a relationship between the heart and the world as possible. The way to stop being depressed (the one that worked for me some time ago anyway) is to be as antidepressed as possible. Thats why the best things to think about and interact with while depressed aren’t happy things per se, but instead real things. There are some trees. That is a duck. Sometimes it snows. I can do push ups. Things like that.
