Today’s school bus data offers encouragement & a reason to keep going -
MORNING
48 of 60 routes on time or early. Just 12 late…the fewest in the 10 mornings tracked since 28 September, compared with last week’s average of 28. Ten of those 12 were within 5 minutes.
Varthur–Gunjur routes averaged 1.8 minutes early, compared with 18.9 minutes late on 1 October. Balagere routes averaged 1.2 minutes early, compared with 22.2 minutes late.
Routes serving Hoodi and Channasandra recorded the biggest improvements since Thursday - arrivals 21–23 minutes earlier.
EVENING
56 of 61 routes on time or early against the schedule for our 1:50 PM departure. Arrivals averaged 23.6 minutes ahead of schedule, compared with 19.5 last week and 15.0 the week before.
44 routes have been on time or early for all six evenings tracked.
STILL ON OUR WATCH LIST
HSR Sector 6 and La Ville were more than 10 minutes late this morning. Skylark Arcadia, Rainbow Drive and KSRP Quarters, Kudlu have been late on all six mornings, though by a few minutes.
Law College and Surya Elegenza were late on four of six evenings.
One good morning does not mean the problem is solved. Rain, breakdowns and other incidents can change the picture. We’ll keep measuring, sharing and working together
And yes, schools are beginning to go on vacation, so that may be contributing to less traffic on SH35
Thank you @blrcitytraffic @wftrps, the government, GBA and our school team for the sustained effort. Let’s make days like today the rule.

Thank you for the work on the #Varthur–#Gunjur stretch. Progress is visible, and it matters.
But today’s ride home shows how much remains to be done. At Bengaluru’s evening rush, 10 km takes 45 minutes, according to TomTom’s 2025 data.
On our slowest school bus routes, the journey home exceeded two hours: 167 minutes for 15 km on one route, and 129 minutes on another!
Ten of our 61 routes took over 90 minutes this evening, compared with four this morning. After a full day at school, mid term exams for middle and senior school, that leaves children precious little time for play, family and rest.
With all of us working together, we can bring these numbers down and give children that time back

Thank you @dpkBopanna for ensuring 40k children & their faculty’s plight on the roads doesn’t become yesterday’s headline!

SH-35 Citizen Ground Report
Thursday is usually our worst traffic day. Today was our best.
GPS data from 61 school buses:
Evening: 0 routes late, 44 minutes earlier at an average
Morning: on time, no Thursday spike
This isn't just our earlier dispersal. At the old timing, late routes fell from 21 yesterday to 8 today. The roads genuinely moved better.
Our teams on the ground credit more police on the corridor and heavy vehicles kept off the road.
Thank you @blrcitytraffic @wftrps @CPBlr @Jointcptraffic @DCPTrEastBCP and GBA for acting so quickly.
Let's not make this a one-week bandaid. Please keep these measures in place, and extend the heavy-vehicle restriction to school hours. That's about 4 of 24 hours, for ~40000 children.
We will keep tracking and sharing the data.

2.5+ hours to travel about 4km from school to home today for kids around Varthur and Gunjur. This is not a one off situation, happens almost every other day. International schools ,big IT companies & lakhs of people have been living in these conditions.

We desperately need help!
Children and teachers spent as much as 7 hours on the road getting to school and back home today. Sadly, this is not a one-off event
We urgently need to invest in mass mobility & public transport, a bigger road network - long term investments for an ever growing #Bengaluru.
And meanwhile, there are things we can do now:
• Keep heavy vehicles off key roads during school peak hours
• Enforce penalties for wrong-side driving & other traffic violations
• Incentivise school buses & shared transport over individual vehicles
• Collect real mobility data and use simulation / “what-if” analysis to determine optimal school & office timings
• Fix potholes, blocked drains & other bottlenecks urgently
This area is home to some of Bengaluru’s and India’s best schools. Their parents & educators have built Brand Blr. And these thousands of children will power the future of our city & country
Surely we can do better for them & for the teachers, parents, staff & citizens who are losing hours of their lives on our roads every day. This needs both immediate action and long-term planning
I believe all stakeholders want what’s right for our citizens & city. So here’s hoping, praying … working collaboratively towards effective solutions

The wards of Bengaluru’s five corporations were drawn based on population
SIR has now altered the electoral arithmetic, with some GBA wards having fewer than 10,000 voters, while others have over 20,000
Even if 70% turn up to vote, the margin of victory could be razor-thin

Varthur and Gunjiur have to be worst affected areas in Bangalore infrastructure wise.
SH35 has been in building mode for a couple decades, and residents have been nearing the brunt. The population increase in the last few years have made it hellish for everyone.

LAND ACQUISITION FOR NEW DEVELOPMENTS IS NEITHER NECESSARY NOR HELPFUL - My opinion in Deccan Herald today to accompany the full-page-plus coverage of land pooling as an alternative to reconstitution across the country.
---
Do we need new townships? The last set of big layouts of the Bangalore Development Authority are fairly empty even years after their 'completion'. Moreover, the 720+ square kilometers within GBA limits is quite flat. One can climb up to the roof of any tall building in the city and look around; there is still plenty of scope for raising the average height of buildings. Doing that instead would limit the sprawl and preserve the countryside.
Consolidation of plots and better urban design can make many neighbourhoods far more livable even with higher densities - there is firm agreement on this among urban planners. Many gated communities have better amenities and comfort than the the layouts around them, even though the density is higher within the gates. That should tell us that it's possible to do a lot more in the existing city.
A standard response to this from government is that even if we increased the capacity within the current boundaries of the city, we will still need more space outside the city since the growth in the population seems endless. Perhaps, but that establishes a sequence. We should first tackle the existing city, and then think about expansion.
And when we do get there, the right question to ask is if land acquisition is necessary. Why not simply rezone the lands in a proposed new area, and let the existing landowners themselves benefit from any development that happens there? Why dispossess and displace them? This is what many owners of the properties in the areas around the city are demanding.
There are examples of this kind of redevelopment - typically called land pooling and reconstitution - from around the country, The most famous example is the Ahmedabad ring road, which was built without land acquisition, but there are also examples from Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad and other places.
When current landowners become stakeholders in the future, they cooperate with the government far more readily. When they sense that they are being dispossessed so that the benefits can be transferred to someone else, they naturally oppose such development. And that has only slowed things down - the Peripheral Ring Road is yet to get off the ground, more than 20 years after its launch.
It is grotesque for the government to tell a landowner that development rights on his land are minimal as long as he owns it, but that much more construction will be permitted once it has been acquired forcibly! That is an arbitrage scheme for public officials and politicians, not a development plan for the people.
Why do we then do this? By far the biggest reason is that although land pooling among existing owners is cheaper and faster, it's also more work for the authorities. Officials must go to owners, discuss and collaborate with them, consider various possibilities, and then put together something that works well for a lot of people.
Development authorities should be doing this, but they have instead tried to create outcomes through authority and the law. They have also sought to profit from new layouts and townships, by keeping a portion of the acquired lands for themselves and selling those at higher prices later, often to 'chosen' buyers. These stances have destroyed public trust in the institutions.
