We’re beyond proud to be awarded Not-for-Profit Organisation of the Year for our role in the campaign to repeal the presumption of parental involvement in family courts.
Women and Diversity in Law Awards 2026 ⭐️
Thank you to everyone who supported our work and to the judges for recognising our fight to transform the system and centre the rights of survivor parents and children.
Thank you @BarnettAdrienne @DrProudman Lucy, Allison, Jeri and Nicole 🙌🏼

Today the Commons votes on the Courts and Tribunals Bill. Clause 17 repeals the presumption of parental involvement — the only legal presumption about what counts as a child's best interests. Removing it puts children's welfare first. 🧵
2/
It's known as Jack and Paul's Law, for Claire Throssell MBE's sons — murdered by their father on a court-ordered contact visit. Since the presumption came in, survivors have been forced to keep contact with their abuser; Women's Aid reports 19 more children killed this way.
(2/2) Behind every case is a mother who found the courage to speak, only to be disbelieved, minimised, or told she must co-parent with the man who abused her. The report lays bare a pro-contact culture.
(1/2) Sky News aired a family court special exposing what survivors of domestic abuse endure inside a system that too often fails them — and it reflects exactly what we see, day in and day out.

1/2 Our founder, @drproudman, spoke to @skynews this past week and highlighted that the report reflects exactly what she sees in her practice as a family law barrister. Ba
2/2 @DrProudman also pointed to the ongoing systemic issues with how sexual violence allegations are handled: there isn’t even a definition of rape or consent, meaning there is no consistent application from one judge to the next.
We’re grateful to all the victim-survivors who spoke out for this piece, and to the many who continue to speak out for change. Your courage is what moves this fight forward.

🚨That lesson doesn't stay in the family court. It follows them into every door they walk through later.

1/ Tina Duggan was 15 when she met Frederick Allchorne, a man ten years older.
She says she was held at a house in south London for six years — drugged, raped, and made to go through a marriage ceremony, unaware he was already married.
She had her first child at 16. 🧵
4/ Cases like Tina's show how often a survivor's so-called "lack of evidence" is really a lack of will to prosecute sexual violence.
5/ Now Tina wants others to know: "It's never, ever too late."

1/ Survivors of domestic abuse are being convicted for unpaid car tax and TV licences through the Single Justice Procedure — magistrates deciding cases alone, on paper, with no hearing and no chance to explain. 🧵
3/ This is financial abuse continuing after a relationship ends — survivors punished twice by a system that won’t recognise them as victims.
1/ An international law written to protect children is now being used against them. Under the 1980 Hague Abduction Convention, a mother who flees domestic abuse across a border with her child can be branded an international abductor. 🧵
3/ In one case, a judge ordered a child returned so the mother "must not benefit from her illegal actions" — handing her to a man she didn't know, who spoke a language she didn't understand. This is the law working as written. That's why it needs to change.
