Health Espresso Inc. is pleased to announce its participation in the international research project Community Access & Remote Empowerment for Self-care (CARES), a two-year Canada-Germany collaboration focused on transforming the way chronic diseases are monitored and managed through artificial intelligence, remote patient monitoring, and interoperable digital health technologies.
The CARES project is supported through the Canada-Germany NRC IRAP–ZIM bilateral innovation program and brings together an exceptional consortium consisting of Health Espresso Inc. (Canada), Durham College (Canada), Universität Siegen (Germany), and Heuel & Löher GmbH & Co. KG (Germany).
The project's objective is to develop an integrated, AI-powered digital health platform capable of continuously collecting, analyzing, and interpreting vital signs, movement patterns, and contextual health data for individuals living with chronic conditions including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, dementia, and other complex health needs.
Health Espresso's Role
Health Espresso will lead the development of the project's AI-enabled digital health platform, leveraging its Collaborative Health Record (CHR), remote patient monitoring technologies, and intelligent care coordination capabilities.
Health Espresso will contribute expertise in:
- AI-powered predictive analytics
- Collaborative Health Records
- Remote Patient Monitoring
- Digital Front Door technologies
- Secure patient engagement
- Clinical workflow integration
- Population health analytics
- Interoperability with healthcare information systems
Advancing Healthcare Through International Collaboration
The CARES initiative represents an important milestone in strengthening research and innovation partnerships between Canada and Germany.
By combining academic research excellence with industry expertise, the consortium aims to accelerate the development of practical digital health solutions that improve quality of care, reduce pressure on healthcare systems, and enable individuals to safely remain in their homes while receiving proactive, data-driven care.
"This collaboration is a great example of what can be achieved when academia, industry, and international partners work together to address some of healthcare's biggest challenges" said Rick Menassa, Founder and CEO of Health Espresso. "We are proud to collaborate with leading research and industry partners in Germany to create technologies that have the potential to improve the lives of patients worldwide."
The project also aligns with Health Espresso's broader vision of enabling connected, patient-centred healthcare through intelligent digital platforms that support prevention, early intervention, and coordinated care across community, primary, and acute care settings.
Health Espresso looks forward to working alongside Universität Siegen and Heuel & Löher GmbH & Co. KG throughout the three-year project to advance innovative healthcare technologies with global impact.
Very grateful to Monty Alexander for the opportunity to share our organizations' @iCare_Health and @HealthEspresso journey to support our vision for #HealthyAginginPlace including physical, monaural and social stimulation; and when suitable, a #HospitalAtHome complimented by #RemotePatientMonitoring using #EspressoCare to reduce long hospital stays freeing beds for more acute cases. health espresso's embedded and OTN certified secure messaging and secure video facilitates hashtag#VirtualCare when needed to reduce ER visits.
Since Monty and I spoke, we engaged in several projects in Europe and the Gulf Region that are constructing similar models of care as the preferred approach to #HealthyAging.

What does it really take to help more people age well at home?
In this week’s Age Tech Innovators, I had the pleasure of speaking with Rick Menassa, founder of iCare Home Health and Health Espresso Inc., about the future of ageing in place, connected care, and AI in healthcare.
Rick brings a really practical perspective to the conversation, shaped by both personal values and hands-on experience across care delivery and health technology.
We spoke about:
✅ Why ageing in place is becoming a priority across multiple countries
✅ How telehealth and remote patient monitoring are changing care delivery
✅ Why hospital at home could become one of the most important models in healthcare
✅ The difference between AI as a technology and AI as a product
✅ What connected, patient-centred care could look like across borders
One line that really stood out to me:
“AI is not a product. It’s a technology. What you do with it becomes the product.”
This episode is a great listen for anyone working in age tech, digital health, elder care, or healthcare innovation.

Honoured to be invited by the Ontario Minister of Finance, Hon. Peter Bethlenfalvy for Pre-Budget Consultation to share ideas on the key issues that need to be addressed in the next budget, including protecting Ontario’s economy and workers, creating more jobs, keeping taxes low and costs down, delivering better services and getting critical infrastructure projects built.
Issue of concern:
Ontario tech companies are disadvantaged in a global race for Healthcare AI development to make the delivery of care more efficient, lower costs and in some cases, fill constrained human resources gaps. To remain competitive, government support is required
Recommendations:
1. AI Development & Global Competitiveness
a) Create a dedicated Healthcare AI Commercialization & Adoption Fund to support development, testing, and deployment of Ontario-built AI solutions for clinical decision support, patient intake, resource planning, and population health.
b) Provide tax incentives and matching grants for companies investing in responsible healthcare AI R&D, keeping high-value IP, jobs, and data sovereignty in Ontario.
c) Position Ontario as a global leader in applied healthcare AI, supporting export growth while improving system efficiency and lowering long-term healthcare costs.
2. Strategic Digital Health Funding
a) Establish a multi-year Digital Health Innovation Fund to accelerate adoption of EMRs, interoperability platforms, and telehealth services across hospitals, primary care, and home care.
b) Targeted grants/credits for rural and underserved communities to ensure equitable access and reduce long-term system costs.
3. Cost Control & Efficiency
a) Prioritize digital solutions that reduce administrative burden and duplication (automated scheduling, e-referrals, shared records) to free clinician time and contain labor costs.
b) Encourage outcome-based procurement where vendors are paid based on service improvements and cost savings, protecting taxpayer value.
4. Economic Competitiveness
a) Incentivize health tech startups with tax credits and access to provincial pilot programs to scale innovations from Ontario globally.
b) Align procurement with local Ontario suppliers to retain economic value and jobs within the province.
These measures support better services, stronger infrastructure, lower costs, and a competitive economy while delivering accessible, modern digital healthcare.
