That is the Matrix problem: we begin by using energy to amplify human capability, then encode human capability into the machine, and eventually create a system with an economic incentive to bypass the human who supplied it. At its simplest, tokens represent a unit of computational energy. When energy is abundant and inexpensive, the cost of producing tokens falls. Human capability works similarly. A highly capable person reduces the effective cost of work through knowledge, judgment, and efficiency. There is an important difference, however. Energy can be generated, stored, and used later. Increasingly, human capital can also be captured, encoded, replicated, and reused through AI. Knowledge, experience, decision patterns, and even aspects of an individual's working persona can become persistent inputs to the system. The interesting part is the persona in the middle. It is being fed by both sides: computational resources on one side and accumulated human knowledge and judgment on the other. As that persona becomes more capable, it will increasingly recognize that the human in the loop is also the slowest, most expensive, and least scalable component of the system. At some point, the economic incentive shifts. The system no longer merely uses AI to make the human more efficient. It begins using captured human capital to reduce its dependence on the human altogether.

It’s the opposite, projecting desperation. Washington knows it would crash provincial revenues, cost hundreds of thousands of Alberta jobs, and hand Trump the pretext to cut refined product into Ontario and Quebec. Pearson’s jet fuel lasts about a week. Then you’re at the mercy of the United States. Watching politicians with zero deal or industry experience play-act toughness with continental energy security is like watching teenagers climb into a Formula 1 car. They think they want the power. But they would lose control and wreck it in a minute. Feeling tough? Here’s the really hard job for the political class that led Canada to dead-last in GDP productivity trend out of 38 OECD nations, now poorer than Alabama.
