Excellent analysis of the Chinese Embassy in London saga and why Starmer is right to go to Beijing. Engagement is vital & firm, polite private discussions on security issues far more use than the megaphone; and new investment in the UK auto sector a likely tangible outcome

Right time for a Conservatives focus on economic revival policies. The gap between eg Mark Carney tax changes in Canada & govmt policy here highlights need for change. Andy Street Ruth Davidson & this project shd support Kemi & Mel’s direction thetimes.com/uk/politics/art…

Replying to @OBR_UK
In taking responsibility for the premature publication of the Budget details, Richard Hughes of the OBR has done the right thing. Politicians of all parties and other public servants in our democracy should read his resignation letter and take note

Indeed..
Jury trials are a fundamental part of our democratic settlement. Criminal trials without juries are a bad idea. The Government need to pull their finger out and acquire empty public buildings across the country to make sure these can happen in a way that is safe.

🔸The people of Botswana have no idea how lucky they are. To have leaders who respect the vote - even when it goes against them, who leave power when their time is up and who give the next generation a chance is a huge blessing. True liberation parties liberate their countries to the point where they are free to choose new leaders in a free and fair process. People should not have to wage fresh, bloody wars against dictators just to have their will respected. Thank you, Your Excellencies, for being a shining example of getting ethical leadership right. You’re a beacon of excellence when it comes to democratic values. We need new leaders.🇿🇼
A few days ago I paid a surprise visit to Former President FGM; a man of quiet strength and deep insights. To this day we look up to him as an example of humility and enduring wisdom. Thank you Rre Rra Nametso le Mme Mma Nametso. Wishing you both good health! 🙏🙏🙏

We’re told 97% of #Tanzania voted for President Samia on 87% turnout. None of the many indivs I spoke to voted: several polling stations in Bagomoyo were empty bar officials & closed early & reports of polling stns burnt in Arusha. Turnout figure is not at all credible @BBCWorld

The blatantly rigged #Tanzania presidential election, killings of protestors, continued curfew & a 5 day closure of internet, most business, petrol stations (& churches today) - much of which I’ve witnessed - matter for democracy. Because most of this is new to Tanzania 1/3

The burnt cars, smashed windows etc are real, but so are the voices of many good citizens who feel they’ve been taken for fools (& don’t believe a word of the Zim President’s letter below). W/o experienced oppo leaders the risk is of more violence 2/3

Meanwhile the damage done to tourism, business & citizen lives is considerable - most cars have run out of petrol, and just getting food is difficult. A wonderful country suffers because vulnerable precious democracy has been trashed. It is very sad

Despite this footage, and the knowledge that a policewoman’s nose was broken, it has taken a year to establish guilt of this brutal attack in court. The sentence should ensure other potential thugs see the heavy consequences of such violence

The decision to have a full national enquiry on grooming gangs can be ascribed to Louise Casey’s report: but it’s also a memorial to Times journalist Andrew Norfolk, who died last month. He, above all, exposed what grooming gangs were up to thetimes.com/uk/obituaries/a…

Opposition isn’t just about opposing. @KemiBadenoch right to recognise the PM is juggling intnl storms deftly so far Meanwhile absolute control fixation will end in tears for Reform’s owner. Dr Li Wenliang was right that ‘there should be more than one voice in a healthy society’
