Oh @GarethRubin why on earth would you attack @SalmanRushdie? Works on a shelf shouldn’t be on show, but can act as an extension of the consciousness, bringing us back to when we read them. And if Dan Brown’s your thing, best wishes, but you needn’t denigrate meaningful reads.

Playing with Perplexity IA, but it's strange - it's self-certain, it provides you with one answer as opposed to many. A bit fascistic feeling!

"Happy life is being an artist So what if you don’t have any money and nobody pays attention and blah blah. It’s a privilege, isn’t it?" Anne Truitt, from film by Jem Cohen

Reading a couple of books that complement each other beautifully. Kegan is psychologist with great writings about levels of adult development. @ted_rau comes from the world of sociocracy (non-hierarchical governance).

Really enjoying and feeling stimulated by Kegan and Lahey’s “Immunity to change”. Tickled to realize I was unwittingly using my old Covid vaccine card as a bookmark.

If you are ever kind of guilty for overstating the value of your assets, you’ll want to bring in hedonic regressions. The math still may not add up, but it can get you a lot closer!

“the willingness to risk excess on behalf of one's obsessions, is what distinguishes artists from entertainers, and what makes some artists adventurers on behalf of us all." - John Updike, in a review of Franny and Zooey

I've dreamed of having a set of these babies since I was around 16, and I have finally pulled the trigger. I find them to make the mind go into hyperdrive better than anything.

Am so enjoying @mdbell79 book Refuse to be Done. Applicable to painting, too. Dig this idea of work that is “collaborated upon by the many selves who existed over the likely hundreds of days you were writing”

Brings to mind Philip Guston saying that a work is a first brushstroke, then each succeeding mark a respond to the previous, etc. For thousands of brushstrokes. A kind of cultural ratcheting unto one’s self.

“I don’t quit until the story stands on its own hooves and turns around to glower- meaning that it’s fully alive and no longer mine.” -Robert Boswell quoted by @mdbell79 (applicable to making paintings)

Reading Jane Alison’s wonderful book “Meander, Spiral, Explode” and thinking how all the explode examples were trauma narratives.

PG Wodehouse (b otd 1881) - genius! “He had just about enough intelligence to open his mouth when he wanted to eat, but certainly no more.” “Already a second edition of his chin had been published.” "I could see that, if not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled.'"

“ it’s painted like the inside of a dress, he said, the inside of a dress touching the skin.” - John Berger, quoting his friend Sven, speaking of a Morisot painting.
