Instead of "How do I protect myself from this person?" I asked, "How do I stay true to myself in relationship to this person?"

Fear says you might fail.
Shame says you are a failure.
Fear is workable. Shame is just fear in overdrive.
So the next time you're spiraling, ask which one is talking.
If it's shame, you're not looking at a problem. You're looking at fear in disguise.
Fear doesn't always feel like fear.
