Alright, let's give this another shot! I have way too many things I want to share to disappear here on X. I look forward to the positive interactions... and we'll deal with the negative ones swiftly 😂

Out with the old, in with the new! My Pocket 386 had a battery with some bad leads on it. I found a new battery, so I just ordered that! It took about two weeks to get here. Battery 3.7V, 4000mAH, 104080 Polymer lithium ion with a JST 2.0 MM connector. I'll reply with a link

Here's the link! Remember, order with a JST 2.0 MM connector. And check the polarity when you get it, I did have to reverse mine using a small screwdriver to free the leads from the connector. bihuade.com/products/1pcs-lo…

I had one last VCFMW pickup to test: this 3Com Etherlink II 8 bit ISA network card. Let's do this! Time for a quick 🧵

Let's configure the PS/2 Model 30 286 to use this card with LAN Manager. One edit to config.sys and one to protocol.ini is all we need! On reboot, the card drivers load and the system shows up on the network!

After that, I copied over an 8MB file from a network share. It took a while, but it did work. Anyway, I give this card a status of "passed." Thanks for following along! @threadreaderapp unroll

So I just modified ANOTHER set of SIMMS to have as spares for the PS/2 Model 30 286. I think with two spare sets, it's time to stop!

Okay.. let's talk about my FAVORITE tech pickup at VCFMW. And that would be this NEC CD-ROM changer (CDR-4300A). I had a chance to check it out and make a few video clips of it. Let's go over that! Time for a 🧵

Okay, enough of that, here we go. I updated config.sys with the drivers from the Vogons post, and, look at that! I wrote a little batch file to do a directory listing between the discs, and made a video clip. Enjoy!

So next up, I wanted to try out Windows 2000 and Windows XP, but I'm only getting one drive detected. I tried registry settings for an hour or two, but no luck. To be continued! Thanks for following along for part 1!! @threadreaderapp unroll

Let's test this eMachines optical drive that I picked up at VCFMW! I've always wanted to have a spare, and there were two at the show that I saw, I found this one first. Time for a 🧵

I debated doing this, since I didn't want to remove the metal "blank" plate, but... well.. you only live once. So in it goes!

And there we have it! I think this looks pretty good, and most drives are getting detected as well, so I think that's all for this. My next optical will be more interesting, I promise. Thanks for reading! @threadreaderapp unroll
