Key learning points are:
1. Simulate, simulate, simulate. Do it now before you’re overwhelmed so you know you’ve optimised staff safety and training in the process.
It is so easy to get donning/doffing wrong and also to get ventilator circuit disconnects etc.

From a well respected friend and intensivist/A&E consultant who is currently in northern Italy:
1/ ‘I feel the pressure to give you a quick personal update about what is happening in Italy, and also give some quick direct advice about what you should do.

the man I nursed today was sad about his double amputee and systemic disease state. He told me that he was mean in his life and he had to do that to make money. Showing him kindness and care seemed like a lesson learnt too late.

Something I’ve learned: a tip for conference/ course organisers - replace all your “debates” with “conversations”.
Learning comes from curiosity, openness, and understanding - not false dichotomies.

One week ago today I was doing CPR on my 8 year old son for a cardiac arrest. Today he came home apparently neurologically intact with a new sternotomy scar and AICD/pacemaker.
I’m so very grateful to everyone who made this possible.
last week we were doing resus on a bus, in a gym and at the dentist. #CPR

Experienced nurses are like diamonds- we must learn as much as we can from them before they move away from the bedside.

I don’t need to read any more think pieces about whether or not poetry matters. How about this short poem from THE SECOND O OF SORROW by Sean Thomas Dougherty.

“Is burnout a problem in ICU?”
“Of course it bloody is.”
If you wanted to design a job to cause burnout, you’d design an ICU job. High stakes, emotional, stressful, technical, complex teams, extensive training, shift work, death.

Some days we save a life, other days we are the last person someone ever sees. It is part of our career, but doesn’t make the latter easy. Develop and maintain your support network #paramedics @EMSWolfpack – at Wagga Wagga, New South Wales
the nursing students asked me today how to cope with your own emotion in an unexpected paediatric death. I told them we take shifts to cry in the sluice room, we wipe the tears away and we relieve our colleagues who also need to go cry in the sluice room.

I have always worn crazy socks. I will continue to wear #crazysocks4docs
It’s my way of telling myself and anyone else that I’m here to help.
1:2 burned out docs
1:5 depressed
1:50 attempted suicide
Beyond socks. Beyond self care. Team care.
