If someone is not breathing at all or not breathing normally, that’s your signal to start CPR.
But what does abnormal breathing actually look or sound like during a cardiac arrest?
Swipe through to find out 👇

ALT An individual performs a breathing check on another person lying down, with a caption 'Let's define Abnormal breathing' in a green box.

ALT The same individual is seen performing CPR on the unconscious person. The text overlay, titled "What is abnormal breathing?" in bold green, explains that abnormal breathing occurs when oxygen is no longer reaching the brain during cardiac arrest. It describes abnormal breathing as irregular, shallow, and possibly sounding like snorting, gurgling, or gasping.

People in deprived areas are:
- less likely to receive bystander CPR,
- less likely to access a defib,
- and less likely to survive cardiac arrest.
This isn’t chance, it’s inequality.
We’re committed to changing this, because where you live or what your background is should not determine your survival.
A massive well done to Mount Alexander Home in Comber who completed their mock arrest simulation training this month!
The staff were able to help a choking resident and acted quickly when the situation deteriorated to provide CPR and use the AED ♥️⚡️

Defibs significantly increase the chance of surviving a cardiac arrest, yet in 2023, they were used in just 8.3% of cases outside hospitals.
This is why greater public awareness and education is needed. These devices save lives, but only if people have the confidence to use them.
