Yes, I have cautioned against peanut butter in the past- it’s all rancid because peanut oil is relatively high in linoleic acid (a polyunsaturated, omega-6 fatty acid) and it sits on shelves for months. “Natural” peanut butter is just as bad. Studies show PB is rancid within 4-8 weeks. Bad news. PBCC was the single most requested flavor of the protein bar, so we had to see if this issue was solvable. Contrary to the convenient narrative, I didn’t just want to make another protein bar flavor for $, I wanted to make something of the highest quality possible. Turns out this issue was solvable. pneumonic plague is nothing like COVID. it's a bacteria (yersinia pestis) that can be transmitted from person to person. it's not something to mess with, but commonly available antibiotics (gentamicin IV/IM, doxycycline orally etc.) are highly effective and available. we'll know more in the coming days about the containment (or lack thereof) of this Russian lab leak, but it's likely not something to worry about.
