🚨BREAKING: ICE agents beat an unarmed man so badly that he suffered a brain bleed, brain swelling and a traumatic brain injury… And now, he can’t even get an MRI because the GPS ankle monitor, ICE put on him, is interfering with the scan. Jose Mejia Hernandez was walking to work in Arlington, Virginia, around 6:30 AM, when a truck pulled up, two armed men got out and started chasing him. He didn’t know who they were… So he ran. According to his attorney, he believes he was hit with a taser, or some type of stun device. And then… nothing. He doesn’t remember what happened after that. When he woke up, he had two black eyes, cuts, severe bruising and a lip injury that needed seven stitches. Doctors later found brain swelling, bleeding and a traumatic brain injury. So, I have some questions… Why was he being pursued in the first place? Why were these agents chasing him down? and what happened after they caught him? Because if ICE used THIS much force, we need to know the WHY. And here’s something that makes me question this entire encounter… ICE eventually released him. They put a GPS ankle monitor on him, and released him under immigration supervision. So, if this man was supposedly such an immediate threat… that agents needed to use that level of force against him… why did they let him go? And then it gets even worse… Because his wife and stepchild reportedly had NO IDEA WHERE HE WAS FOR THREE DAYS. While he was in the hospital, his attorney says ICE agents stayed next to him, which prevented him from having private conversations with his doctors. A nurse eventually had to quietly tell him that he had suffered a brain bleed and brain swelling. And now, his condition has gotten worse. He went back to the hospital, and doctors wanted an MRI to figure out how serious his brain injury is. But, the ankle monitor, ICE put on him, is interfering with the MRI. If a device is preventing doctors from properly evaluating a BRAIN INJURY CAUSED BY FEDERAL AGENTS, it needs to be dealt with… immediately. This is a HUMAN BEING. And let’s also talk about the legal issue here… Yes, law enforcement can use force when necessary. But, the Fourth Amendment protects people from unreasonable seizures, and force used during an arrest has to be objectively reasonable under the circumstances. So, when an unarmed man ends up with brain bleeding, brain swelling, a traumatic brain injury, and extensive facial injuries, you don’t just get to say, “Well, he was being arrested.” That is NOT a normal. And the fact that he can’t remember what happened makes this even more disturbing. We need the bodycam footage. We need the use-of-force reports. We need to know who these agents are. We need to know why he was being pursued. We need to know what happened after he was caught. We need to know why his family wasn’t told where he was for THREE DAYS. And we need to know why ICE’s own ankle monitor is now getting in the way of doctors treating him, and why it’s not being removed. This is a perfect example of why accountability matters. You cannot beat an unarmed man so badly you cause a brain bleed… and expect everyone to just shrug it off. This man deserves answers. And truthfully, the American people do too.
