Thought PM Kishida might use this ‘scsndal’ to show true leadership by replacing some of the outgoing ministers etc with a few women and create a more diverse Cabinet but I should know better. Sigh. Harrumph. Grrr. #manel #diversity #womenleaders #Japan 🇯🇵

Still one of my favorite graphics re: voting systems & representation. #PR alone is better than our plurality system, to be sure. But the key ingredient here is quotas. PR alone is not enough for women, and that needs to be clear. @IPUparliament's 2021 Women in Politics Report

Today I addressed the parliamentary session at @ReykjavikGlobal Forum🇮🇸, convened by @WPLeadersOrg.
Women's representation in parliament should not be token.
It must be substantive and quality.
Gender sensitive #parliaments help that.

#Chattisgarh has the highest prop. of #womenMLAs among all state #assemblies. But, in the 1st phase of elections, only 11% of the candidates are women. As the state goes for #elections tomorrow, read about women’s political participation in the state.

Indian #WomensReservationBill in international context, and what needs to be done to ensure gender parity in legislatures. Excellent article by @akshichawla
Gender parity a global problem and a little tough in India at home, relationships, community, society, corporate world, administration, legislatures, political, electoral and government.
At legislatures even bigger, as Indian legislators doesn’t have much saying in legislature decisions due to party whips and personalities driven political leadership and decisions making. Party whip’s doesn’t allow a legislator to express his/her views, represent electorate’s voices and excise vote on any legislation bill under consideration freely and fearlessly without any disqualification swords hanging on his/her head.

🗳️👩⚖️ India's path to political gender equality is progressing but lags globally. The Women's Reservation Bill offers promise, but a clear timeline is essential for true representation.🌐🇮🇳 #GenderEquality #WomenInPolitics

Examples from various countries show that electoral quotas for women work but the willingness of political parties and vigilance of stakeholders is essential, @akshichawla writes:

#WomenReservationBill is a good step, but examples from across the world show that quotas are only as good as the intention/integrity with which they are used.
In India, parties haven't shown that yet, despite the unanimity they showed in Parl.

The media has been full of reports on the history of the #WomensReservationBill. The fact that it does have a history is because of the steadfast and sustained mobilisation of women’s organisations and movements throughout the country...💯💯💯
