Sixty-one years after the Voting Rights Act became law, we honor the courage of those who marched, sacrificed, and refused to let injustice have the final word.
Today, that legacy is being tested. From the weakening of key protections in the Voting Rights Act to ongoing efforts to restrict ballot access, dilute Black voting power, and undermine fair representation, the right to vote remains under assault.
The Congressional Black Caucus remains steadfast in protecting this fundamental right because democracy is strongest when every voice is heard and every vote counts.
The Voting Rights Act was never the finish line—it was a promise. We will continue the work of restoring and strengthening that promise for generations to come.

This Mother's Day, Olivia Walton joined NBC’s @MeetThePress to launch #HealthyMomsHealthyBabiesAmerica, a national campaign to put a spotlight on cutting maternal mortality in the United States in half within five years. I've been horrified to see videos circulating on social media of Black women in labor being ignored or dismissed in healthcare settings.
I’m proud to cosponsor the WELLS Act, by @RepRobinKelly, which urges hospitals to create a Safe Discharge Labor Plan before sending any pregnant patient home.
Every woman, no matter the color of her skin, should be treated with dignity and care.
The WELLS Act honors Mercedes Wells, a Black woman who was discharged from a hospital despite being in active labor and had to give birth in a truck.
This is an avoidable trauma that no woman should face, but Mercedes’s story is just one of many. With stories and experiences such as these, it is no wonder why the U.S. has the highest maternal mortality rate of all our peer nations and a rate which is 3x higher for Black moms. #EndMaternalMortality

Mercedes, who was discharged from a hospital while in active labor, told me she wants to be a vessel for change. Her courage to speak out will improve maternal health for her newborn daughter & many more Black women.
