Memphis is home to some of the world’s greatest healthcare providers, but our neighbors in nearby rural communities can’t always make it to the city when they’re in need of medical attention. That’s why we allocated $125 million to support improvements in rural hospitals.

Nobody wants to leave their vehicle on the street, and later come back to a broken window and missing belongings. That’s why we raised the penalties for burglary of motor vehicles like cars, trucks, trains and even boats. Criminals should think twice in Tennessee.

This year, we made assaulting a first responder a felony. Our police officers, fire fighters, EMT’s, and others play such a valuable role in keeping Shelby County and all of Tennessee safe, and it is our responsibility to keep them safe too.

About 50% of public university students in Memphis, along with about 75% of our community college students, never finish their degree. That’s why we delivered $4.5 million to TNAchieves, a non-profit that helps students finish and earn their higher education credentials.

New technology brings new challenges, and one of the biggest issues facing our kids and young people are the dangers of E-Bikes. That’s why we updated E-Bike regulations across Tennessee this year, including raising the minimum age for a class 3 E-Bike from 14 to 16.

This year, we expanded the definition of Vehicular Assault to include intoxicated drivers who cause serious injury. That means heftier penalties for people who drive drunk or high. If you drink, don’t drive.
