Today is September 1, 2025, the day HB 107 takes effect in the State of Texas! Today, which is also the first day of #SickleCellAwarenessMonth also serendipitously marks the first time in state history that we have a statewide sickle cell registry. This is huge! Thank you to Reps Jarvis Johnson and Lauren Simmons and their staff (Katelyn, Amanda, Mo, Cody) for all the hard work put into this registry over the last three legislative sessions! The only bill on the calendar today is the redistricting bill.
Also, the governor could have acted immediately to help Texans in central Texas. He chose Trump over his constituents.
Texans can tell the difference between victims and fundraising stunts.
The victims are the families who lost children and loved ones in the tragic central Texas floods.
What’s happening right now on the House floor is nothing more than a political fundraiser by someone who unnecessarily delayed flood relief for the past few weeks.
I challenge my colleague @NicoleCollier95 to donate all the money raised during her sleep-in to the families of the Kerr County floods.

Over the long term, we shouldn’t have political gerrymandering in America, just a fair fight between Republicans and Democrats based on who’s got better ideas. But since Texas is taking direction from a partisan White House and gerrymandering in the middle of a decade to try and maintain the House despite their unpopular policies, I have tremendous respect for how Governor Newsom has approached this. He’s put forward a smart, measured approach in California, designed to address a very particular problem at a very particular moment in time.
We’re grateful to President @BarackObama for being in this fight with us and supporting our mission.
California is advancing a process that gives voters the final say on implementing new maps.
This is a fair and responsible response to Trump’s unprecedented power grab.
