One month ago, catastrophic flooding tore through communities across northern and central Nepal, devastating 1.6 million people. This week I joined @ajsocal_ and @jamuseum to discuss the state of immigration in our country. Trump's anti-immigrant agenda has trampled on the rights and due process of our immigrant communities, particularly AANHPI immigrants. Since Trump took office again, deportations of Asian immigrants have skyrocketed by 1,103%. In 2025 alone, deportations of Southeast Asian elders rose more than 20-fold compared to the year before. Our immigrant communities contribute to every facet of American life. I will always stand with them.

During the Eaton Fire, families had little time to evacuate, forcing pet owners into an impossible choice: leave their pets behind, or risk their own safety by staying. My bipartisan bill, the PETSAFE Act, would expand FEMA funding to help state and local governments plan for and protect animals during disasters. Our pets are family. Our disaster plans should protect them too.

Yesterday, an ICE agent shot Wilber Rafael Garces Perez while he was making a food delivery. Now, he is being held at the South Texas Detention Complex with a bullet lodged in his body, forced to sleep on the floor with no pain medication. This is the reality of the Trump administration's brutality. I have joined @RepCasar's letter demanding an independent investigation. This violence must end.

After the Eaton Fire devastated our community, timely mortgage payments dropped dramatically. That's because thousands of families were unsure on how they were going to meet their mortgage payments, all while trying to repair and recover their homes. I'm relieved that mortgage relief for victims has been extended, but relief shouldn't be a fight every time disaster strikes. VA healthcare staffing shortages just hit a 7-year high — nearly 5,000 unfilled positions this year, with psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers all ranking among the top 5 clinical shortages. These health professionals treat Veterans with combat-related trauma, PTSD, and injuries sustained during their service. Staffing shortages means slower, worse care for our Veterans. This is exactly why I led a letter earlier this year requesting answers from @SecVetAffairs about the significant cuts being made to the VA’s mental healthcare workforce. Since the Eaton Fire, survivors whose homes were still standing but were contaminated by toxic smoke have faced challenges in getting their homes tested and remediated. Without a national or state standard for smoke damage, survivors have lived in fear that their homes are not safe to return to or reside in due to these toxic contaminants. This law establishes first-in-the-nation standards to test and remediate homes damaged by wildfire smoke, and ensure that insurance will pay the cost of making your home safe again. latimes.com/politics/story/2…

An update for our Eaton and Palisades fire survivors on FEMA Disaster Case Management Program Funding:

Republicans call it the “Empowering Moms Act.” There is nothing empowering about steering pregnant women away from qualified medical providers and toward anti-abortion centers that have been caught misleading women about their health.   In @WaysMeansCmte, I offered a simple amendment: if a center has been caught providing medically false information or putting women’s health at risk, Moms.gov should not send women there. Republicans voted it down.   Women deserve facts, real medical care, and the freedom to make their own decisions. I will never stop fighting for their reproductive freedom.

Republicans just cancelled the last scheduled voting day before the midterms. Nearly 25% of the days Congress was supposed to be working for the American people have now been taken off the calendar. Meanwhile, families are paying more for gas, health care, housing, child care, and goods hit by Trump's tariffs. While Republicans skip town, Democrats are ready to stay and work to lower costs. The American people deserve more than the most unproductive Congress in history.
