Obama and Clinton didn't just threaten to bomb civilian infrastructure; they actually did it.
We should hold Trump's actions to the same standard as we hold them.
But we should also hold his words to a high standard, even though words matter less than action.
Saying a whole civilization will die will be reasonably interpreted as threatening civilians, a standard that America should never even be perceived as falling to.
Not even as a negotiating tactic.
This is true even though the Islamic Republic, which is evil, has no standard at all.
Trump deserves credit for just negotiating a cease fire, and that's the most important outcome here: that the killing stops.
Even as we celebrate the ends, we should still scrutinize the means.
