I can't really explain why or how, but i feel like the style of play of almost every positional coach i like that goes to the Premier League gets rigid and dogmatic... And they don't seem to recover from that for some reason... Biggest examples are Sarri, De Zerbi and now Xabi

The amount of solutions this team has is amazing
Suprised nobody is talking about this very direct buildup from #RacingSantander in their game today. 👇
Defensive midfielder get pass from Goalkeeper, and a movement is intiated between Vicente and Ivan Martin. Vicente Inverts into midfield and plays a 3rd man combo to a running Martin.
As the play continues Racing finds themselves in a 3v2 which could have very easily ended up in goal.
I think this raises an important conversation about "planned" buildup patterns and directness. Just because a buildup pattern is established does NOT mean it has to be intricate. Rather, these patterns are often more effective yet require players like the magician Vicente to execute them.

Understanding Positional Play as a Zonal Attack (as per Perarnau's conversations with Guardiola) is key to understanding the fundamental differences with Relationism.
Relationism is concerned with the perceptual references that allow Non-Zonal attacking organisations to emerge.

Imagine thinking this two years ago that a commentary team - English language broadcast that goes out across the world- is talking about Relationism from a team in a Top 5 league
Don’t let people tell you its only spoken about on social media

It’s incredibly gratifying to see how much the Overton window has shifted over the past 2 years
From Relationism being considered an extension of positional play or something intangible
To something that is not just discussed but is being actively practiced at the top level

In terms of concrete tactical concepts, diagonal combinations are about as close to the mystical "Manchester Utd way" as you can get.

Michael Carrick coaches why moving after passing the ball is important for verticality play.
It allows room for almost one touch pass + quick forward play
Also he talks about how where you move is also key + body positioning.
Reminds me of Manchester City game.
Nordic football is so unique and interesting, relational football seems to be the norm there in the past few years.

Revisiting Luciano Spalletti's Napoli, it was a lot more "structured" than Michael Carrick's Man Utd this season but the idea of having midfielders closer to each other and to the ball was there for sure.
Replying to @RelationistTh
Reminds me a lot of what Spalletti's Napoli used to do with their midfield trio aswell.
I like Scaloni a lot but at this WC he is being very passive, he is not recognizing that the 2024 cycle is over...
