Pundit Brij Narayan (1882-1926), known by his pen name 'Chakbast', remains one of the most respected voices in Urdu literature. Born in Faizabad in 1882, his enduring poem "Ramayan Ka Ek Scene" gently portrays Shri Ram’s final, sorrowful meeting with his mother before his banvas. To convey the true weight of this parting, Chakbast thoughtfully drew upon the marsiya (elegy) tradition of Mir Anees. Born in 1911, Asrar-ul-Haq 'Majaz' was one of the most famous Progressive poets known for romantic and revolutionary poetry. Raised in an educated family in Uttar Pradesh, he studied in Aligarh and quickly became a beloved literary star among the youth. His beautiful poem "Awaara" made him incredibly popular, and he briefly worked as the first editor of the radio magazine "Awaaz." Sadly, losing his job and suffering a broken heart in 1936 pushed him toward a severe drinking problem. This addiction ruined his health and caused major mental breakdowns in 1940 and 1945, forcing him to spend time in mental hospitals. His life ended in December 1955 after he was left behind on a locked tavern roof overnight. Even though his life was cut short by these personal struggles, his graceful poetry is still loved and celebrated today. Born in Balkh in 1207, Jalaluddin Rumi was a renowned scholar who became a mystic after meeting his spiritual guide Shams of Tabrez. Devastated by Shamsi's death, Rumi founded the Maulvi order, incorporating music, flute and mystic dances to seek divine union. His principal work 'The Masnawi' contains 26,000 couplets exploring Sufi philosophy through stories and spiritual maxims. Rumi taught that the soul longs for reunion with the Divine, achievable through love, piety, and selflessness. His life ended in 1273, leaving a legacy of devotion and spiritual wisdom. Born in 1884 in Patna, Mirza Wajid Hussain—remembered today as Yagana Changezi—is one of the most inspiring pre-modern poets who laid foundations for the modern ghazal. When he moved to Lucknow, he found a local poetry scene stuck repeating old styles. Instead of following the crowd, Yagana wrote with a bold, clear voice and openly questioned the city's intense obsession with Mirza Ghalib. Readers loved his fresh approach, but established local writers strongly disliked an outsider succeeding in their city. Years later, his rivals used his outspoken verses as an excuse to publicly humiliate him in the streets. He passed away in 1956 surrounded by hostility, but his poetry collections like 'Aayat-e-Wijdani' survived the hate and changed the course of Urdu literature forever. Born in Ireland in 1854, Oscar Wilde was a brilliant author, poet, and playwright. He spent the 1880s trying out different writing styles to find his true voice. By the early 1890s, that hard work paid off, and he became the most popular stage writer in London. Audiences adored him for his bold fashion, great jokes, and his belief that life should be beautiful. He wrote the dark novel The Picture of Dorian Gray and the hilarious play The Importance of Being Earnest. Sadly, right at the peak of his massive success, he was sent to jail for two years because his private life went against the strict laws of the time. The harsh prison conditions ruined his health and broke his spirit. He moved to France with almost no money and died at just 46 years old.
