The DC Privacy Summit returns next week!
--> What does privacy look like when AI agents can act as you?
--> Can we avoid digital ID becoming a surveillance tool?
--> What are the real limits of techno-solutionism?
--> And what happens when crypto, AI, and politics collide?
We’ll be digging into all of it on October 15 at the National Union Building.

What do you know? A Meta's Muse AI agent appears to have problems listening to users' privacy requests and just hoovers up info it's not supposed to inc.com/jason-aten/metas-new…

Seems like there are a lot of crimes being conducted by AI companies tonight. The word “rogue” is the language the AI titans want you to use. Don’t buy it. They own this.
I wrote last week for @theatlantic about crimes against the human species.
“The rapid development of AI has caused widespread speculation about what will happen when the technology “goes rogue.” This metaphor should be retired, because it implies that the companies and individuals that build and deploy these models aren’t culpable for building products that are supposedly too smart to control.”

“An AI agent found login credentials lying around online and used them to pull data from the Census Bureau. It tried to break into the Education Department's civil rights office. It posted SEC data to a forum. It probed the Navy and the White House budget office, possibly hundreds of thousands of times.
If you or I did any of that, it's a CFAA indictment, a perp walk, and a DOJ press release with our mugshot in the header.”
Let me get this straight.
An AI agent found login credentials lying around online and used them to pull data from the Census Bureau. It tried to break into the Education Department's civil rights office. It posted SEC data to a forum. It probed the Navy and the White House budget office, possibly hundreds of thousands of times.
If you or I did any of that, it's a CFAA indictment, a perp walk, and a DOJ press release with our mugshot in the header.
When OpenAI does it, it's a "routine research task."
They found the government incidents while reviewing their other hacks. The breach audit, uncovered more breaches. It's breaches all the way down.
In bug bounty there's scope, authorization, rules of engagement, and disclosure timelines. Researchers get banned for a fraction of this.
Silicon Valley skipped all of that and called it "agentic."

This seems to be the crux of the mess we’re in with AI. Hundreds (thousands?) of highly trained researchers—people who for a time dedicated themselves the scientific method—have been bewitched by software and abandoned evidence-based thought in favor of magical thinking
This should surprise no one. It was foreseen by climate scientists. Why? The ocean has been soaking up heat (and carbon) giving us, in effect, more time to get right with the carbon cycle. We kept dumping into the atmosphere. It was just a matter of time till things boiled over.
A metric of El Niño strength indicates that the phenomenon has reached an intensity unseen in recorded history.

“Oh it’s fine, our agents so out of control that they are attacking US government sites and barfing our users’ images onto the internet and probably a lot of other things we don’t know about yet, but we’ve totally got this” openai.com/hugging-face-inci…
