This is a rough September inflation report. -Biggest monthly jump since May -Higher than expected inflation AND core inflation -Core Inflation for the past 3 months is running at well over a 3% annualized pace...that's problematic -Inflation (3.7%) totally wiping out wage gains (3%) Yes, high gas and diesel prices are the major driver, but also big jumps in airfares, used car prices, recreation, medical and apparel. The energy shock is spreading.

An understated fact about NM is how relatively cheap our utilities are.
Hawaii has highest utility costs in America at 83.5% above national average, followed by Alaska (+48.4%) and Massachusetts (+43.9%); all six New England states rank in top 10 for utility costs, reflecting region’s reliance on imported fuels and constrained pipeline capacity; Idaho has cheapest utilities at 26.6% below average, followed by New Mexico, Montana, and Nevada @VisualCap

T.J. was an extraordinary journalist & producer, and one of those rare people who made every conversation richer than it began. We shared countless interviews, emails, and texts on economics & policy. He was a truly remarkable human being, and we are all poorer for his passing.
Friends and colleagues remember T.J. Wilham as a big-hearted, meticulous reporter who gave everything to every story. abqjournal.com/news/an-excep…

Is the US homeownership rate 65%? Or is it actually 53%? The Minneapolis Fed just released important research that rethinks our understanding of the US homeownership rate. The US Census rate of 65% measures the percent of homes that are OWNER OCCUPIED. That metric doesn't work well in this era where adult children increasingly live with their parents. The Minneapolis Fed looks at what % of the adult population owns a home. "HPOP" That number is much lower -- only 53%. Important read: minneapolisfed.org/article/2…

This is a fantastic read, and articulates succinctly the points I try to make during my talks: our housing problem is a failure to let markets work. When we centrally plan scarcity, we shouldn't be surprised when prices ration opportunity (and faith in capitalism erodes)
To most people “capitalism” is just the name for the status quo so the badly broken housing status quo facing young people discredits capitalism in their eyes — we need to actually fix this and not just explain that socialism won’t fix it. slowboring.com/p/to-save-cap…

The Economist's new BBQ Index tracks the prices of 10 American cookout staples across 25 cities, and this year's results are not good. The grocery basket now costs $81, which is 12% more than a year ago and "the fastest annual increase in a decade"

Great piece, with striking figures. In states that raised minimum wages, pay has gone up -- but there has been no effect on the number of jobs.
We've been running an unprecedented natural experiment running for a decade and half. 30 states have raised their minimum wages. 20 have not. What happened to pay? What happened to jobs? The good news is that it's pretty easy to figure out now. Link next post.

March 2026 was *by far* the hottest in New Mexico's recorded history - 4.4º warmer than the previous record. The statewide average March temperature has never been above 51.2º and this year was 55.6º. It also tied for the 2nd driest March on record. #NMwx

One year (and 191 counties) later, I’m up to 2,028 counties visited - only 1,116 left!
I just turned 40 recently, so I decided I’m going to try and visit every county (and equivalent) in the US by the time I turn 50. So far it’s 1,837 down, 1,307 to go. Biggest metro area I’ve never seen? Birmingham, AL (#47) Largest city I’ve never been to? Fort Wayne, IN (#83)
