The real and overwhelmingly disproportionate violence is the violence that cannibalistic capitalism uses to extract profit from the labour, bodies and health of people.

Online safety has focussed on regulating content that Big Tech companies allow on their platforms. But when it comes to regulation around content or accounts that are removed, or quietly demoted on social media, there is little regulation on offer.

Yesterday, Israel’s official X account published a lengthy statement trying to cast doubt on the irrefutable evidence that Israeli assailants brutally beat an American journalist. Less than 24 hours later, it had to do the same thing again, this time over the brutal assault on European diplomats.

While public ownership on the Lothian model would be better, bus regulation is progress and probably the only affordable way of putting the public back into public transport. As we highlighted in this briefing. reidfoundation.scot/2023/11/… bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cmx2…

Thanks to advances in renewable energy technology, such as solar panels, Britain’s homes are increasingly decentralising the energy system, and becoming less reliant on oil and gas price fluctuations. blogs.lse.ac.uk/politicsandp…

Call for wind farm communities to retain £78m a year from business rates. It would be complex to do this for specific industries, but business rates used to be a local tax, and should be again.

I spoke at this meeting and this report is somewhat selective. Yes, councillors were critical about the process and timetable, but the meeting was much more positive about devolving power to communities. scotsman.com/news/politics/s…

The Guardian view on the banks: too big to fail cannot mean too big to tax.
Financiers owe their windfalls and bonuses to higher interest rates. Britain should reclaim more for the public and resist City lobbying. 👏👏👏

As we transition to Net-Zero, the priorities of communities and workers must be front and centre. We cannot allow Scotland's renewables sector to be a playground for the rich.
The European Charter of Local Self-Government, which is being incorporated into Scots Law does require consultation with citizens before boundaries are changed. Citizen assemblies are one way of doing this, which enables complex issues to be addressed.

Scotland is too centralised, but the PM is largely talking about devolution to regions. Local government reform in England is a mess, with little movement towards devolution of power to recognised communities. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cmly…
There was certainly criticism of the process and timetable at the meeting. But not around the need for local government reform and decentralisation of power to communities of place.
